What does it actually take to build a national badminton program? Mike Butler, National Team Head Coach of Badminton Canada, gave us the honest answer in three parts.

It starts at the grassroots. ”I’m indebted to them in a big way,“ he says of the personal coaches and private clubs putting in the countless hours with the national team, the backbone most people never see.

Then there‘s funding. ”We’re succeeding in spite of the lack of funding,“ Mike told us candidly. His goal is to take that financial weight off the athletes so they can focus on competing instead of worrying about who‘s paying the bill.

And this year, Canada held its first ever Badminton Summit, tackling safe sport, women in sport, and a sponsorship barrier that’s held the program back for years. Mike‘s hope is to land the next big partner for Canadian badminton, alongside longtime sponsor Yonex.

Sometimes the most memorable interviews happen in the quiet moments after the final point.

Following his quarterfinal victory at the Yonex Canada Open, we sat down with Lee Zii Jia and asked a simple question:

After all the highs, the setbacks, the victories, and the challenges, what has kept you going?

His answer was immediate.

”Patience is the most important for me, because without patience and passion, you can‘t move forward.“

Over the past year, Zii Jia has been working to find his way back to his best form. In this candid conversation, he spoke openly about that journey and the people who have helped him continue pushing forward.

”The fans are showing me a lot of love, a lot of support. That’s one of the reasons I‘m still standing here today.“

It was an honest, reflective, and deeply human moment from one of badminton’s biggest stars—reminding us that even elite athletes rely on the encouragement of those who believe in them.
