Recently first death case of Naeglaria fowleri was reported in Lahore. The 30 year old patient Mustafa Shafique was a resident of Icchra and was admitted to Service's Hospital Lahore. Previously the cases were reported from Karachi.

Naegleria fowleri is named after its discoverer, Malcom Douglas Naegler, and the British microbiologist Rodney Fowleri. It's commonly known as the "brain-eating amoeba."

Naegleria fowleri is a rare and deadly amoeba found in warm freshwater and soil. Although infections are extremely rare, they can be fatal. The amoeba enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain, causing a severe brain infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Initial symptoms resemble meningitis, including fever, headache, and nausea, which rapidly progress to seizures, hallucinations, and coma.

Preventive Measures: To minimize the risk of infection, it's crucial to avoid water-related activities in warm freshwater bodies, especially when water levels are low or temperatures are high. Use nose clips or hold your nose shut to prevent water from entering your nasal passages during activities like swimming, diving, or water sports. Additionally, ensure that swimming pools and hot tubs are properly maintained and chlorinated. Remember, awareness and precaution are key to staying safe!

نیگلیریا فولیری کا نام اس کے دریافت کرنے والے میلکم ڈگلس نیگلر اور برطانوی مائکرو بایولوجسٹ روڈنی فولری کے نام پر رکھا گیا ہے۔ اسے عام طور پر "دماغ کھانے والے امیبا" کے نام سے جانا جاتا ہے۔
