My bones grow spurs and my womb grows growths, my ovaries cysts, my breasts tumors, my doctors say I am too fertile, there is too much of me inside of me. At the same time my fingers bend with the years, like those of my Serbian grandmothers’ who chopped wood and hoed hard ground, and bathed in ice rivers, and birthed a dozen each.
My body is a forever loop connected through molecule and gene and also through time to my Slavic kin.
Theirs and mine fused in fascia and gristle and by synapse and by song. Through language and through time we, me, them are really in essence one.
While all this is going on, I learn to draw a tree a stalk a pony and an eye. I grow cataracts in both eyes and for years my vision is blurred but I can’t even tell because is it my eyes or had my life become colorless, dull… to be continued…

I drown myself in color.
I have used nine hundred ninety nine shades of blue already.
When I run out I invent more.
Every day, I drink from a fresh faucet of lies.
We all drink from the same faucet.
What’s one to do then?
Lick the drops and close your eyes.
Maybe if we drench the world in colors we will chase away the monsters.

I once knew a woman
Who never lit her many expensive candles or drank from her many dainty Persian tea-cups
I once knew another woman who saved her coins from usage and her ears from the sound of bird-talk.

Another woman I called friend, was afraid to speak her land’s language, the one her ancestors gave her.

I knew many a woman who didn’t grow her nails or shape her eyebrows or cut her hair or paint colors on her face, nails, home, life …

I once knew so many women.

Some are already early dead.
Some are alive in body, but just.
Others have tried to dance their story but failed.

I even once knew a woman who grew poppy seeds in her brain!
And an army of others’ whose gold bangles clinked in union with the glint of desert sun,
and the beat of their men’s hearts.

I pray hard for my dead friends.

And even harder I pray for all seeds to grow
if only they knew seeds were there.

Zvezdana takes the reader from the legendary Balkans to an immigrant's experience in America, from a sudanese ghetto to busy Cairo streets and the mirage of Dubai.
This book is imbued in one women's journey of self-discovery through poetry and prose by writing from heart, by unravelling, and painting the world in boldly colored stories.
