Cooling tower parts and working:
A cooling tower removes heat from hot process water by bringing it into contact with atmospheric air. In a mechanical-draft cooling tower, a fan forces or induces airflow through the tower while water is distributed over the fill media.
π§ Major components
1. Hot Water Inlet
Hot process water enters the cooling tower from the plant/process system.
2. Water Distribution System
Nozzles distribute hot water uniformly over the fill media.
3. Fill Media
Provides a large surface area for waterβair contact, improving evaporative cooling.
4. Fan & Fan Motor
The fan moves air through the tower, while the motor supplies the required mechanical power.
5. Drift Eliminators
Reduce the amount of water droplets carried out with the exhaust air.
6. Cold Water Basin
Collects the cooled water at the bottom of the tower.
7. Cold Water Outlet
Cooled water is returned to the process or cooling-water circuit.
8. Tower Casing
Provides structural enclosure and directs airflow through the cooling tower.
9. Access Ladder
Provides safe access for inspection and maintenance.
βοΈ How it works
Hot water β Distribution nozzles β Fill media β Airβwater contact β Evaporation β Heat removal β Cold-water basin β Process
As water flows over the fill, a small portion evaporates. The latent heat required for evaporation comes primarily from the remaining water, reducing its temperature. The warm, moisture-laden air then exits through the fan stack.
π‘ Engineering takeaway
Cooling-tower performance is strongly influenced by hot-water temperature, cold-water temperature, wet-bulb temperature, airflow, water circulation rate, fill condition, and approach temperature.
Lower approach temperature generally indicates better cooling-tower performance, although achieving a very low approach requires appropriate tower size, airflow, and operating conditions.
