Every 90 seconds we move 20,000 km into the orbit of the galactic center. The Earth and all other planets revolve around the Sun. Our star doesn’t remain stationary in space: it in turn rotates around the center of the Milky Way at a speed of 800,000 km/h. This means that in just 90 seconds we're moving 20,000 km along the orbit around the center of the galaxy! These numbers are impressive, but keep in mind that the Sun is about 26,000 light-years from the galactic center. By doing the math, our star completes a revolution in approximately 220 million years! Just to think about it, the last time the Sun was in its current position, exactly one orbit ago, dinosaurs appeared on Earth. Since the formation of the Solar System, our star has only given about twenty revolutions around the center of the galaxy.
