The Legal Aid Forum Rwanda

Today we convened a high level event with over 100 stakeholders to discuss the findings of the final assessment report of the implementation of 2021 UPR recommendations by the Republic of Rwanda.

The report was compiled by the Rwanda CSO coalition on UPR, which is chaired by LAF.

We reflect led together on what has been achieved, what still needs to change, and how we — as government, civil society, and development partners — can continue working together to advance the protection and promotion of human rights in Rwanda.

In his remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator commended the strong collaboration between government institutions and CSOs in the UPR process, emphasizing that such partnerships are essential for achieving inclusive dev’t and is a reflection of the interdependence of human rights.

: In partnership with we have convened a workshop on digital media literacy and responsible freedom of expression in Rwanda.
We have an amazing turn out of over 100 representatives from Gov’t, CSOs, journalists, lawyers and development partners.

During the opening session, speakers emphasized that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, it must be exercised within the limits of the law and with respect for the rights of others.

Today our ED paid a courtesy visit to the Hon Minister of Justice/Attorney General . The interaction with the Minister revolved around how the existing partnership between the Ministry and LAF can be expanded to ensure more accessibility and affordability of Legal Aid Services in our communities in a more sustainable manner. They also discussed strategies to increase capacity building for the Justice Sector Actors in .

From today, we are hosting a 3-day Training of Trainers for UPR coalition clusters, designed to boost their capacity with a comprehensive understanding of critical human rights instruments and enhance their skills in monitoring and reporting on them, especially the UPR.The training is part of the Civic Space Advancement Project (CSAP) aiming to enhance civic space for civil societies in promoting human rights & strengthening democracy in Rwanda jointly implemented by LAF, , HDIRwanda, , with support from .
