Today marked the start of a Joint Technical Working Group field assessment on epidemiological surveillance and preparedness for Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (BVD) at 6 Points of Entry and 3 Referral hospitals in Rwanda bordering DRC and Uganda.

Led by the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) and conducted in collaboration with IOM, Jhpiego and other partners, the mission brings together government authorities, health experts and development partners to review preparedness measures at selected Points of Entry and linked health facilities across Rwanda’s borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Over the coming days, the team will assess surveillance systems, infection prevention and control measures, referral pathways, and emergency response capacities to help strengthen readiness for potential public health threats associated with cross-border mobility.

As part of her visit to Rwanda, IOM Director General Amy Pope visited the IOM Rwanda office & Transit Center, where she met with staff and learned more about programmes supporting migrants and communities across the country.

The visit provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives with colleagues, recognize their dedication, and gain first-hand insight into IOM’s work on protection, migration management and community support.

During her visit to Rwanda, IOM Director General Amy Pope met with migrants and beneficiaries supported through IOM programmes and heard first-hand about their experiences.

From building livelihoods and contributing to their communities to rebuilding their lives after difficult migration experiences, their stories reflected resilience, determination and hope for the future.

These conversations are a reminder that migration is ultimately about people. Through the right support, protection and opportunities, migrants can contribute to stronger communities and social and economic transformation. IOM remains committed to ensuring that people are at the centre of migration policies and programmes.

During her visit to Rwanda, IOM Director General Amy Pope met with the Prime Minister and senior Government officials to discuss shared priorities on migration governance, labour mobility, diaspora engagement, youth employment, skills development, regional integration and resilience.​

​The discussions highlighted Rwanda’s continued leadership in integrating migration into national social and economic transformation efforts and advancing policies that expand opportunities for people while supporting economic growth and regional cooperation.​

IOM remains committed to strengthening its partnership with the Government of Rwanda and supporting initiatives that promote safe, orderly and regular migration while contributing to sustainable development and prosperity.

Rwanda is demonstrating how well-managed migration can create jobs, build skills and strengthen regional cooperation.

During her official visit to Rwanda, IOM Director General Amy Pope met with Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, senior Government officials, development partners, UN representatives and migrants supported by IOM.

Discussions focused on how labour mobility, skills development, diaspora engagement and protection can expand opportunities for people while supporting national and regional priorities.
