A few months ago, we shared a video from David Pillings’s visit to Mahama Refugee Camp in Rwanda. What stood out to him was not only the scale of the camp, but the energy within it: busy streets, entrepreneurs at work, customers being served, and a market in motion.
Now, his Financial Times article, How refugee camps become mini-economies, builds on that reflection.
We are glad to see this narrative reach more people, because how these markets are seen shapes how they are engaged, financed, and included.

At the World Bank Group – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement (JDC) Research Conference in Bangkok, Dennis Kyalo and Justin Musabyimana, MBA shared findings from 7 years of Inkomoko data covering 4,275 entrepreneurs in Rwanda's displacement-affected communities.
The takeaway: training builds capability, but access to finance drives business creation. For many entrepreneurs, the difference between an idea and an income is access to the right financing.
The path from idea to income requires more than ambition - it requires access.
During THE AFRICA CEO FORUM in Kigali, Inkomoko Rwanda brought together policymakers, philanthropists, private sector leaders, and entrepreneurs from displacement-affected communities.
The conversation challenged leaders to look beyond displacement and recognize the opportunity to invest and help drive business growth.
The narrative is shifting, and we’re proud to be part of that change.
May gave us one big headline: Inkomoko was ranked the 5th fastest-growing company in Africa by the Financial Times.
But the real story is our clients.
More than 120,000 entrepreneurs across East and Central Africa are growing businesses, creating jobs, and building markets.
This month, we’re spotlighting five of them.
Their stories are part of , our World Refugee Day campaign.

What comes to mind when you think about a refugee camp?
For many people, it's images of crisis and dependency. But spend time inside these communities and you quickly see something much bigger: entrepreneurs building businesses, employing others, serving customers, and creating opportunity every day.
The people in this video are cafe owners, creatives, retailers, and business operators working hard to support their families and their communities.
Economic inclusion is safety. When displacement-affected people can earn, trade, and build, they gain stability that aid alone cannot provide. Reframing how we see these communities is the first step: not as populations waiting for help, but as active local economies full of talent and market potential.
Across the region, entrepreneurs supported by Inkomoko have created more than 44,000 jobs. In Rwanda alone, more than 26,000 jobs have been created, with women and youth making up the majority.
These communities are not defined only by need.
More private sector players should be paying attention.
