African Parks takes on Nyungwe Forest National Park management.below message from African parks “We are so pleased to share that we have signed a management agreement with the Government of Rwanda for Nyungwe National Park, signaling an historic step to secure one of Africa’s most important Afromontane rainforests. Occupying 1,019 km2 in the heart of the Albertine Rift, Nyungwe harbours exceptional levels of biodiversity, including 25% of Africa’s primate species and more than 1,000 plant, 96 mammal and 300 bird species, many of which are found only within the park and this high priority conservation region. Nyungwe is also a vital water catchment area, providing most of Rwanda’s fresh water. Following our decade-long partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) for Akagera National Park, Nyungwe is the second park in Rwanda and the 19th park to join our management portfolio. With the Rwandan Government’s exemplary commitment to Nyungwe, this hopeful new chapter working alongside partners and communities will ensure the long-term protection of this biodiversity hotspot, optimise its exceptional potential for conservation-based tourism and secure lasting benefits for people and wildlife in Rwanda.
