The Christmas season is upon us. In this village, there are the poor, and there are the destitute. This morning the Pioneer students brought offerings from their homes to bring a little joy to the neediest in our community.

Broodstock replacement doesn't happen overnight. It takes 6 to 9 months. We maintain three families of GIFT tilapia. This one is the Caleb family. After a few weeks in the aquarium, we hand pick the fastest growing fry to become the next generation of broodstock. In another 3 months, we will separate the males and females and make another selection for the fastest growers within their gender group.
Last year we focused on establishing a gene pool for the improvement of our tilapia broodstock. Using a base of Thai GIFT and Dutch YY we established three genetically diverging families that bring out the best of the two parent strains and avoid inbreeding depression that is such a common problem for fish farms in the region. I opened an account in Gashora for parents to pay school fees into. I requested online access, but still waiting after 4 months. I escalated to Nyamata branch manager who agreed to solve the problem, but did nothing and will not take my calls.
