Many years ago a young doctor began to write stories about a man who was a detective. Readers liked his stories because they were very interesting and the doctor decided to become a writer. The doctor was Conan Doyle and he wrote about Sherlock Holmes.Conan Doyle wrote his first story about Sherlock Holmes in 1887. In this story the detective meets his friend Dr. Watson. Holmes and Watson lived at 221 В Baker Street in London.

Their three grandchildren became scientists. Howard was a talented entomologist, William and Joan were both physicists. The latter was almost the only woman-physicist who took part in the work at the atomic project of the USA. Their second daughter Margaret is known as mother of the outstanding English mathematician Jeffrey Tailor who is a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Their third daughter Alicia was a specialist in the field of multidimensional space. The fourth daughter Lucy was the first woman-professor. She headed the chemistry department. But the youngest daughter Ethel Lilian is the most famous. She married the Polish scientist and revolutionist Voynich. Her wonderful book 'The Gadfly" was translated into many languages and gained popularity in many countries of the world.

When you go in, you enter the foyer, then you come to the cloak-room, where we leave our coats and hats. You can also take opera glasses there. After that you go to the theatre hall. The person who meets you at the entrance is usher. You must show your ticket to her.

When you enter the hall, you find your seats. You can see the stage in front of you. You can't see the scenery before the performance start. The orchestra pit is next to the stage. This is where the musicians sit and play the music. The performance begins after the third bell has rung. The curtain goes up and you become a spectator. If the spectators enjoy the performance they applaud, give flowers and small presents to the actors and actresses.

We have a very beautiful theatre in our town. It is a modern building situated not far from the center of Oryol. The visitors can enjoy watching dramas, tragedies, comedies and sometimes an opera or a ballet. The visitors usually buy tickets beforehand in the ticket booths or in the ticket box offices. Theatrical shows usually start at 7:00 p.m.

Inside there is often a "salad bar", where you can help yourself to as much salad as you want. Americans eat a lot, and when they go to a restaurant, they don't expect to be hungry afterwards. Most restaurants will put a lot of food on your plate — sometimes it can be too much. But if you can't finish it all, don't worry: they will give you a "doggy bag" and you can take it home. Most Americans now have a light breakfast instead of the traditional eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. But on weekends there is more time, and a large late breakfast or early lunch is often eaten with family or friends.

What is "American" food? The answer is that it is part Italian, part British, part German, part Mexican, part Chinese… When people from other countries came to live in the US, they brought different cooking traditions. Some of them opened restaurants. Today Americans enjoy food from all over the world. Over the years some foreign dishes changed a little. Doughnuts were originally from Holland. In 1847 a young American boy told his mother that her doughnuts were never cooked in the middle. He cut out the centre and his mother cooked them — and they were very tasty! Maybe the US is most famous for "fast foods". The first fast food restaurants served hamburgers, but now they serve other kinds of food too.

At the West End theatres you can see most of the famousEnglish actors and actresses. As a rule, the plays aremagnificently staged - costumes, dresses, scenery, everythingbeing done of the most lavish scale. Choose a good play, andyou'll enjoy yourself thoroughly from the moment the curtain goesup to the end of the last act. Get your seats beforehand, eitherat the box-office of theatre itself or at one of the agencies.When you go to a theatre, you'll probably want to seat as near tothe stage as possible. But if you are at the cinema, you mayprefer to seat some distance from the screen. In fact, I wouldsay, the further away the better.

Theatres are very much the same in London as anywhere else;the chief theatres, music halls and cinemas are in the West End.If you are staying in London for a few days, you'll have nodifficulty whatsoever in finding somewhere to spend an enjoyableevening. You'll find opera, ballet, comedy, drama, r***e, musicalcomedy and variety. Films are shown in the cinemas most of the day.

As for me, I had decided to be a teacher, so last year I entered Irkutsk State Teacher Training University. Our University is situated in the centre of Irkutsk; it is rather small building, but very comfortable. Students say that our building is the best and it is quite easy to find different classes.

As for subjects – we have ten. They are: English practice, grammar and phonetics, Russian, Survival Science, Pedagogic science, Medicine, History, Physical Education and others. I find my subjects quite amazing because they help me to understand the way of teaching other people and to learn some more information, I have never known before.

Centuries ago there were only a few jobs: people were farmers, bakers, butchers or salesmen. Today there are thousands of different kinds of jobs, and new ones are constantly appearing. And the problem of choosing the future profession has always been very important and difficult matter because it determines our future life in many ways. It is one of the most important decisions for every person.

I'd like to point out, that Masha is rather brainy, and that's why she is excellent at school.
In general Masha is loyal, trustworthy, tactful and great at keeping secrets. For me it is very important that my best friend is an honest girl. I can fully rely on her and trust her everything. To tell the truth, we have never let each other down.
In conclusion I'd like to add, that my friend is an interesting person. She is well-read. Her favourite foreign author is Julian Rowling and her creation Harry Potter.
