The inhabitants of Essence are organized into covenants - factions founded by the powerful and mysterious Great Ancestors. The fate of covenant followers is harsh: every day they fight for life and for life-giving pneuma, the only and scarce source of sustenance. Covenant followers worship pneuma, though it remains a cause for great misery and hardship due to its constant scarcity. But the land of Essence harbors threats far more frightening than starvation. Day by day, the world of the past becomes more and more intrusive into the lives of covenant followers. Now, the dangers from the darkness of bygone times awaken from their centuries-long slumber, to put covenant followers to the ultimate test of their strength, will and intelligence.
