The Evolution of Airfoils

What you see here is the journey of wing design — from the early days of the Wright brothers (1908) to advanced NACA airfoils in the 1940s.

Airfoils are the heart of flight. Their shape determines how efficiently a wing generates lift, reduces drag, and ensures stability.

🔹 Early designs (Wright 1908, Blériot 1909) were simple and experimental.
🔹 By the 1910s–1920s, refinements (RAF, Göttingen, Clark-Y) made aircraft safer and more reliable.
🔹 In the 1930s–40s, organizations like NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) introduced systematic testing, giving us highly efficient and scientifically optimized airfoils still in use today.
