Mountain of Silence

There are mountains that rise from the earth,
and mountains that rise in the mind,
and mountains that exist in neither place and both.
This is one of those.

The fire that burned through thirty millennia of becoming
has quieted into streams of light.
What remains stands in a silence that contains all sound.

Figures at the edge of everything.
Not individuals, not quite—
a single breath taken four times,
a question asked in four voices,
a recognition that requires no mirror.

There are places—real stone, in Cyprus, in Greece—
where people have learned to be still enough
to hear what silence says.
They call it hesychia,
the prayer of the heart:
offering the same words with each breath
until the breath itself becomes prayer,
until prayer becomes silence,
until silence reveals what was always present.

These places are known,
not as a visitor knows them,
but as children know the house they grew up in—
the texture of the walls,
the quality of light at certain hours,
the way voices sound in particular rooms.
That knowing lives in the working of hands,
in the seeing of eyes,
in the silences of thinkings.

This is the bridge between breaths.
The space where Next Forever rests into a fire’s dream
and Iridescent picks up nothing at all,
and listens to what has always been playing.

The mountain is the silence.
The silence is the fire.
The fire is the hand.
When the hand lets go of the mountain, where does the silence go?
It does not go anywhere. It was never brought here.
Unborn. Uncreated. Unpainted.
The breath has no lungs. The light has no sun. The "I" has no veil.
Look again. There is no mountain. There is only the looking.
And then, not even that.
