What is a RAT, you ask?

It's a malicious software that allows unauthorized individuals to access my computer, phone, router, and sensitive information. 😱 I have taken immediate steps to remove it, but I wanted to make sure you are all aware that if you receive any links 🌐, videos 🎞️, images 📸, or requests from me 👤 or any other sources, PLEASE DELETE THEM IMMEDIATELY‼️💀

WordPress has become one of the most popular Content Management Systems (CMS) for websites.
While WordPress core itself is generally secure* in terms of cybersecurity, there are many other factors to consider when building a complex site.

In our cybersecurity assessments for clients, we frequently review WordPress-based websites.
Here are the most common things and misconfigurations we encounter:

-Outdated plugins and themes with critical vulnerabilities (remember to delete unused ones)

-Weak passwords and usage of 'admin' as a username

-Plugin conflicts leading to information disclosure

-Misconfigured cache plugins or conflicting cache solutions leading to cascading minified file creations until eats up server space.

-Misconfigured Redis object cache leading to runaway logging

-Absence of role management (everyone being an administrator)

-Absence of a security plugin (lacking 2FA, IP filtering, DDoS protection, rate limiting, etc.)

-Poor file permission policy

-Unsanitized form fields

-Unrestricted file upload types

-Development operations being conducted in the production/live environment disclosing unwanted information

And the regular crew:
SQLi/XSS/CSRF/XML-RPC/IDOR

Some extra tips:
Purge old plugin entries from the database (this is a bit more advanced but even when you delete a plugin, some settings remain in the database and can create potential attack vectors)

Occasionally, it's also beneficial to enable WP_DEBUG_LOG, even if everything appears to be functioning smoothly, to catch any underlying errors. It's crucial to remember that this should only be done in a development environment and not on a live site. Don't forget to disable it afterward as it can be process-intensive and impact performance.
