Referral is how you turn customers into passionate advocates.

You know your business is booming when customers refer your product or services to others. Traditionally, this was done through word of mouth. Today it’s more of a word of ‘type’ situation, as customers use social media and online forums to discuss opinions.

That’s a great thing, as it’s easier to track referral metrics such as Social Shares, Reviews, Referral Conversion Rate, Net Promoter Score (NPS).

To improve the referral rate, you can do the following: Referral Programs, Testimonials, Community Building, and, not least, Excellent Customer Support.

Although this is the last phase of the AAARRR funnel, marketing doesn’t stop. When you get an overview of each phase and compare them, you’ll find bottlenecks, aka phases with lower conversion rates that can (and should) be optimized.

Retention is the cornerstone of subscription-based businesses (and not only).

Getting new customers is 5 to 25 times more expensive than keeping the existing ones, according to Harvard Business Review.

The AAARRR funnel's Retention phase looks at how often a customer returns to your product or service.

Important metrics to track during this phase are:
1️⃣ Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV) – the total amount of money one customer will generate
2️⃣Churn Rate – the number of customers a business loses over a period of time
3️⃣Retention Rate – the number of customers a business keeps over a period of time (the opposite of churn rate)
4️⃣Customer Satisfaction – you get this metric by interviewing customers or sending them a customer satisfaction survey

A happy customer will eventually become a brand ambassador (which we’ll discuss in our next post), so investing in this phase is a good idea.

Revenue is the money-making phase. Everyone loves this one! No matter how noble a business’s mission is, it needs money.

HubSpot is a great example. Although it’s free, it has paywalls in critical moments. For example, the free version lets you automate chatflows, but if you need to automate surveys or workflows too, you need to upgrade.

The main metrics you should track for this phase are:
1️⃣ Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) – how much money you spend to get a new customer
2️⃣ Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV) – the total amount of money one customer will generate

Other relevant metrics to track are trial to paid conversion, freemium to paid conversion, and average revenue per user.

Activation is the ‘AHA’ moment. This funnel phase is where most digital marketing agencies stop. This is where Activation comes into play. In this phase, people discover how valuable your product or service is and how much it can improve their lives.

See, it’s not enough to get sign-ups. What’s the point if users install an app but dislike using it each time?

Some popular ‘AHA’ moments examples:

Facebook – a user connects with 10 people within the first 7 days of sign-up. It pushes early product adoption and the engagement from gaining 10 “new” friends each week encourages long-term use.

Twitter (X) – a user follows 30 users, with at least 1/3 of them following back. Similar to Facebook, the engagement from gaining followers encourages long-term use.

Slack – a team sends 2000 messages in a workspace. This is a great example, different from the ones above. It’s safe to say that after exchanging 2000 messages, the users already adopted the product and see its value.

Acquisition is when strangers become friends.

After building awareness, you want to find which channels drive visitors to your product. In this phase, they become members, they sign up for a newsletter, or install an app.

A great framework for finding your business's best channels for acquiring clients is the Bullseye Framework. It involves three circles:
1️⃣ The Inner Ring: here you add the channels that bring the most results and are currently working for you
2️⃣ The Middle Ring: here you add promising channels that might start working
3️⃣ The Outer Ring: here you add the least promising channels; they might work, but don’t bring immediate results

When creating this, focus on conversion rate and customer acquisition cost (aka CAC). One channel might have a high conversion rate, but if the customer acquisition cost is too high, you can either optimize it (by working on the offer, copy, design, etc.) or choose another channel.

Awareness is the beginning of the buyer’s journey. It’s also the beginning of the AAARRR funnel, aka Pirate Metrics Framework. Dave McClure, founder of 500 Startups, created this funnel to accelerate startups’ growth and help them avoid vanity metrics.

Many digital agencies focus on the first two phases (Awareness and Acquisition). A growth marketing agency needs to focus on the full funnel.

There are plenty of ways to improve this metric, and our favourites are: content marketing, social media presence, paid advertising, search engine optimization (SEO), influencer marketing and contests & giveaways.
