Google has just quietly made a major change to how it serves search results, in an attempt to safeguard its SERPS against bots and scrapers. Searchers are now required to have JavaScript switched on when launching a query.

This could potentially have major implications for SEO tools and rank trackers, as post of them rely on conventional HTTP requests. Google's new rule might mean those tools would have to simulate a web browser (or use a headless Chromium interface) in order to continue to function.

The situation is somewhat ironic, given that Google has just intensified its anti-scraping measures on the heels of one of the most aggressive scraping efforts in history conducted by Google itself for its AI programme.
