Melinda’s work relies on a distinct current of psychic automatism: a spontaneous, unfiltered method akin to a controlled drift that lets thoughts articulate themselves without premeditation. Drawing from Surrealist strategies, she navigates the subconscious, dream imagery, and the uncanny, continually probing the boundaries of perceived reality.

This collage operates strictly within that logic. The female form appears fragmented, sliced, and traversed by dunes, ridges, and ripples of earth that resemble aerial satellite imagery, pointing toward the stark absence of the sea. Where water should lie, the tide has receded, leaving behind only an arid, fossilized terrain.

Within AROSOLI, the body emerges from and folds back into this desiccated landscape as if caught in a strange coastal dream, one where the sea has vanished entirely, and skin and sand merge into a single, mineral surface.

A greenish figure with large, dark eyes casually bites into an ear of roasted corn. The creature from another world performs the most mundane, human, and quintessentially summery gesture imaginable.

The humor emerges directly from this incongruity: the existential terror of invasion deflated to the drowsy scale of an ordinary afternoon on the sand.

Proof of alien life has finally been found, and it’s hanging quietly on our wall. 👽

Teodor Graur’s At the Beach with Aunt Mița (and Grandma) (2026) captures that exact bittersweet, melancholic memory of the shore, from 1980’s Costinești directly into the rooms of Vila Catena.

Created through an evocative mix of charcoal and gouache on paper, the work bridges decades of the artist’s practice: from his early performative actions as quiet subversions against the totalitarian regime, to a poignant return to drawing. Placed in dialogue with his historic photographic interventions, the seaside reemerges not just as a getaway, but as a shared space of collective memory, personal freedom, and layered nostalgia.

The Freaks Come Out at Night

A porcelain cabinet, a bedside lamp, curtains drawn over nothing. The entire grammar of someone else’s living room, rendered in that ashen graphite gray where every interior feels faintly deceased.

Dan Beudean relies on the oldest rule of the horror genre: the uncanny does not emerge from the wild, but sits right at home, occupying the exact seat meant for the host.

Nowhere does home feel more foreign than by the sea. The coast rents its rooms by the week, mismatched furniture, borrowed china, a mattress that has harbored hundreds of passing bodies, and the quiet salt mist slowly corroding every surface. Stripping away color, Dan turns this seasonal domesticity into a suspended film still, capturing the precise frame before something goes quietly wrong.

Within the domestic rooms of AEROSOLI, the drawing taps into the strange, disquieting reverie of temporary seaside lodging, where sleeping in another’s home unleashes the darkest fictions.

Seaside

THEODOR PALLADY

In Theodor Pallady’s artwork, the sea does not appear as a spectacle, but as tranquility. A massive promontory, in shades of ochre, brownish-green, and shadow, occupies nearly half the canvas, turning its back on the viewer and allowing the water to recede toward a pale horizon, where the waves barely break.

There is no human presence, only the rock, the sand, and the heavy, cloud-filled sky, in a silence that takes the place of any narrative.

Far removed from the animated landscapes of other painters of the era, Pallady chooses isolation as his subject here. The fluid grays and cool tones of the sea, balanced by the earthy warmth of the shore, compose an image of retreat and contemplative solitude, in which his customary rigor translates into a state of suspended calm.

Morphologies of the Self

In Irina Cristescu’s series, the self unfolds as a dynamic morphology in continuous flux. Fine red lines accumulate in dense layers, blooming into fan-like structures and delicate rosettes that feel grown rather than drawn - evoking coral lattices, gills, shells, and living tissue seen under a lens. From this biological sediment, eyes quietly emerge from within the folds, as though the organism has suddenly developed an inward gaze.

Rendered in the visceral hue of blood, muscle, and rock-clinging marine species that tirelessly filter the tide, the drawings treat the body as an open ecosystem. Suspended in the air of AEROSOLI, they mirror the sea’s own regenerative mechanics, capturing how memory and identity form layer upon microscopic layer.
