On March 26, the 𝐁𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 (𝐁𝐀𝐅) space (13 Amzei Street) hosted, as part of the 𝐁𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 and the 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭, a panel discussion featuring 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐭𝐬 (architectural historian, director of INTI), 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐧 (landscape architect, Rotterdam City Urban Development Department), and 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞 (architect, OPEN Garage), as well as the Romanian launch of the publication 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬 | 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬, produced as part of the European project New Towns New Narratives, coordinated by the International New Town Institute (INTI) and funded by the European Union through the CERV program.

On this occasion, an exhibition curated by Raluca Paraschiv and Alex Axinte was also opened, dedicated to the Drumul Taberei district, which is organized around a looping boulevard and has undergone several successive transformations. Designed by a young team of architects, the district was structured into microrayons and has become a remarkable example of collective living thanks to its extensive green spaces, educational, sports, and cultural infrastructure, as well as informal gardening and leisure activities.

Housing, as a form of adaptation and domestication of the standardized spaces of the original design, is represented in the exhibition through images characteristic of the neighbourhood’s early period - “Monografia Drumul Taberei” (1973) from the Mihai Oroveanu Image Collection, and photographs from the 1980s - 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞 and 𝐃𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮, through academic research and products of socio-anthropological research – the collection of the Garaj DESCHIS / OPEN Garage project (2020–2025), objects found or borrowed from current and former residents of the neighbourhood, documentary images from the collection of the Oraș în Buclă (City in a Loop) creative critical research residency (2024), and works of contemporary art - 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐢 & 𝐁𝐨𝐠𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮, 𝐈𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐭̦ 𝐃𝐮𝐥𝐚̆𝐦𝐢𝐭̦𝐚̆, Ana Kun, 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐧, 𝐑𝐮𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 𝐍𝐢𝐭̦𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮, 𝐓𝐮𝐝𝐨𝐫 𝐓̦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐮.

The New Towns | New Narratives project brings together a European network of partners from 16 new towns - new cities or districts built in the 1960s and 1970s based on modernist plans, often as industrial towns or satellite cities of historic cities. Today, many of these areas face social and demographic challenges, a fragile public image, and the need to redefine their identity. The initiative aims to explore new ways of telling the stories of these places and to rediscover the forms of collective life and creativity that have developed within them. The volume Telling the Story. New Towns, New Narratives, edited by 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 and 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞 and published in 2025 by the International New Town Institute (INTI), is the result of the shared concerns of the project partners. The texts illustrate various ways to shift the tone and perspective of the usual narratives - often marked by stigmatization - through which these neighbourhoods are represented. The editorial approach draws on the research and activation project, as well as on the extensive experience gained in the field by those involved in local cultural and community life.

Open on the ground floor of an apartment building, in a former garage—which had previously served as a pharmacy and a tailor shop - 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐣 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐒/ 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 - began as an academic research project by Alex Axinte on informal practices in Drumul Taberei and, over the course of five years of activity, into a community space dedicated to the neighbourhood’s memory: a library, archive, exhibition space, workshop, and research hub. The exhibition features materials from the OPEN Garage archive, the Map of Collective Practices in the Buclă (The Loop), and a series of videos directed by 𝐈𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐒𝐳𝐚𝐬𝐳 documenting the researched themes.

Initiated by Raluca Paraschiv and the 𝐑𝐄𝐂 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞), the Oraș în buclă (𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐩) project facilitated creative critical research on the Drumul Taberei district by organizing artist residencies in an apartment building in the neighbourhood and compiling a living archive of meetings with specialists and local residents, speculative interventions, and diverse interpretations of the shared space.

Foarte bucuros că această carte a fost publicată și lansată la sfîrșitul lui 2025, ca un prim rezultat al proiectului Towns | New New Towns New Narratives, la care am contribuit la editare și conținut, împreună cu o echipă minunată și pasionată de moștenirea și viitorul Orașelor Noi. Ne-am bucurat de contribuții extrem de diverse, atît din punct de vedere regional – din toate colțurile Europei –, cît și disciplinar – de la istorici de arhitectură, cercetători, arhitecți și urbaniști la artiști, curatori, manageri culturali și funcționari publici.

În secolul al XX-lea, în Europa au fost construite peste 200 de așa-numite Orașe Noi. De obicei, acestea sînt considerate orașe fără istorie și identitate, în care locuitorii doar trăiesc, fără a se simți aparținînd acelui loc. Însă, după mai bine de jumătate de secol, aceste orașe au existat suficient de mult timp pentru a-și construi o istorie complexă, deși aceasta este adesea necunoscută atît pentru străini, cît și pentru locuitori.��
Unele dintre aceste orașe au fost construite ca orașe nucleare sau găzduiau muncitorii din portul sau industria minieră din apropiere. Unele erau proiecte emblematice în confruntarea din timpul Războiului Rece dintre Europa de Est și Europa de Vest. Altele găzduiau surplusul de populație din marile metropole. Multe dintre ele au îndeplinit promisiunea locuirii ca un drept, mai degrabă decît ca merit economic, oferind infrastructură echitabilă pentru viața colectivă. În ultimii doi ani, orașele noi din toată Europa au încercat să-și identifice povestea prin proiectul 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬 | 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬.��
În toate aceste orașe noi s-au dezvoltat forme particulare de viață colectivă și creativitate individuală, adesea în spațiile lăsate libere de instituțiile oficiale. „Povestirea” acestor orașe și a tuturor locuitorilor lor oferă o bază pentru găsirea identității lor și pentru reinventarea lor într-un mod pozitiv. De la expoziții istorice la expoziții de artă, de la festivaluri la plimbări și tururi, de la noi spații colective la proiecte de cercetare, exemplele din această publicație arată numeroasele noi eforturi depuse în orașele noi europene – de la Marea Britanie la Bulgaria – pentru a schimba percepția asupra acestor orașe neglijate.

I am very happy that this book was published and launched at the end of 2025, as a first result of the Towns | New New Towns New Narratives project, to which I contributed in terms of editing and content, together with a wonderful team passionate about the legacy and the future of New Towns. We enjoyed extremely diverse contributions, both regionally - from all corners of Europe - and disciplinary - ranging from architectural historians, researchers, architects, and urban planners to artists, curators, cultural managers, and public officials.

More than 200 so called New Towns have been built in Europe in the twentieth Century. Usually, they are seen as cities without history and identity, where residents merely reside, without belonging. But after more than half a Century, these cities have existed long enough to build up a layered history, though it is often unknown to both outsiders and residents.��
Some of these cities were built as nuclear cities or they housed the workers in the nearby harbour or mining industry. Some were flagship projects in the Cold war stand-off between Eastern and Western Europe. Others housed the overflow of people in big metropolises. While many fulfilled the promise of public housing as a right, rather than an economic merit, providing equitable infrastructure for living together. In the past two years New Towns from all over Europe tried to identify their story through the project 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬 | 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬.��
In all of these New Towns, particular forms of collective life and individual creativity developed, often in the cracks left by the official institutions. ‘Telling the Story’ of these cities and all its residents gives a basis to finding their identity and to reinvent themselves positively. From historic to art exhibitions, from festivals to walks and tours, from new collective spaces to research projects, the examples in this publication show the many new endeavours in European New Towns -from the UK to Bulgaria- to change the perception of these neglected cities.

bibelou și mileu din colecția Garaj DESCHIS (2020-2025)

Mobilă, cărți, haine sau jucării care nu mai trebuie sînt aruncate să facă loc celor noi. Așadar, din cînd în cînd, diverse obiecte apar pe la colțurile străzilor. Acesta este unul dintre ele. Este un bibelou, reprezentând un cîine într-o poziție jucăușă, recuperat de la gunoi în cartierul Drumul Taberei în 2021. Produs de masă al industriei socialiste, la fel ca mobilierul modern, apartamentele standardizate sau orașele noi, bibelourile erau folosite de locuitori pentru a îmblînzi și domestici un mediu prefabricat. Pentru primii locuitori care s-au mutat aici încă de la începuturile cartierului, aceste obiecte au fost printre primele lucruri care i-au ajutat să-și construiască un acasă. De-a lungul timpului, ele au căpătat o semnificație personală, devenind dispozitive de memorie, așa cm își amintește o contabilă pensionată cînd privește unul dintre bibeloruile din colecție:
“De ziua mea l-am primit de la fetele de la birou. L-au luat din centru, de la Romarta. Vezi ce frumos e? A fost cu mine atîția ani. Și la cutremur. Atîta s-a mișcat vitrina și el n-a căzut. Dar s-a spart televizorul. Ne uitam la un film la bulgari. Ce tare s-a simțit la etajul 10! Mergeam în patru labe pe hol. Și pe urmă, am mers pe jos pînă în centru.” (B.M, 2021)
Un studiu publicat în revista Arhitectura 5/1973 despre stilul de viață al locuitorilor din Drumul Taberei în noile lor blocuri de apartamente a concluzionat că semnificația ritual-simbolică a obiectelor a prevalat adesea asupra ipotezelor arhitecților de a realiza o organizare spațială modernă, eficientă și utilitară. Spațiile interioare, precum și cele exterioare, erau astfel „trăite” dincolo de standarde, norme și viziuni tehnocratice impuse de sus în jos. De-a lungul timpului, o serie de practici informale creative și neascultătoare au transformat cartierul la scară largă, devenind un mod de viață pentru locuitorii săi (Alex Axinte).

Lucrarea a constituit „suvenirul” ce a ilustrat cartierului Drumul Taberei la expoziția finală a proiectului New Towns New Narratives, coordonat de International International New Town Institute (INTI) și finanțat de Uniunea Europeană în programul CERV. Împreună cu lucrările artiștilor Ana Kun și alexandra coroi & bogdan dumitrescu, au ilustrat trăsăturile cartierului, pe baza proiectului Garaj DESCHIS/ OPEN Garage (2020-2025) și în parteneriat cu USAMV București și Oraș în buclă. Expoziția a fost prilejuită de lansarea cărții Telling the Story, ce a avut loc pe 15-17 Octombrie 2025 la EPICenter în Nova Gorica, Slovenia. Expoziția face parte din proiectul Ab Initio - an urban utopia, care, în cadrul Capitalei Europene a Culturii GO! 2025, explorează modul în care memoria și povestirea devin fundamentul comunității și culturii.

knick-knack and embroidery from the OPEN Garage collection (2020-2025)

Furniture, books, clothes or toys that are no longer needed have to make room for newer ones. So, from time to time, various objects appear on the street corners. This is one of them. It’s a knick-knack, representing a dog in a playful position, recovered from the trash in Drumul Taberei district in 2021. A mass product of socialist industry, just like the modern furniture, the standardised apartments or the new towns, knick-knacks were used by dwellers for taming and domesticating a prefabricated environment. For the pioneers who moved here from the beginning of the district, these objects were among the first things that helped them make a home. Over time, they gained personal significance, becoming memory devices, a as a retired accountant recalls when she looks at one of the knick-knacks from her collection:
“I got it for my birthday from the girls at the office. They bought it downtown, from the Romarta store. See how beautiful it is? It’s been with me for so many years. Even during the 1977 earthquake. The display case shook so much, but it didn't fall. But the TV broke. We were watching a movie on Bulgarian television. It felt so strong on the 10th floor! We crawled on all fours down the hallway." (B.M, 2021)
A study published in Arhitectura magazine 5/1973 on the lifestyle of Drumul Taberei residents in their new apartment blocs concluded that the ritual-symbolic significance of the objects often prevailed over the architects’ assumptions of achieving a modern, efficient and utilitarian spatial organization. Interior spaces, as well as exterior ones, were thus 'lived' beyond the standards, the norms, and top-down technocratic visions. Over time, a series of creative and disobedient informal practices have transformed the district at scale, becoming a way of life for its inhabitants (Alex Axinte).

The work was the "souvenir" that represented the Drumul Taberei district at the final exhibition of the New Towns | New New Towns New Narratives project, coordinated by the International New Town Institute (INTI) and funded by the European Union under the CERV program. Together with the works of artists Ana Kun and alexandra coroi & bogdan dumitrescu, they illustrated the district’ features, based on the Garaj DESCHIS/ OPEN Garage (2020-2025) project and in partnership with USAMV Bucharest and Oraș în Buclă. The exhibition was timed to coincide with the launch of the book Telling the Story, which took place on October 15-17, 2025, at EPICenter in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. The exhibition is part of the Initio - an urban utopia project, which, within the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025, explores how memory and storytelling become the foundation of community and culture.

Proiectul pleacă de la texturile pe care le-am adunat în timpul rezidenței în Drumul Taberei, de la rătăcirile noastre prin cartier și de la unele idei pe care le-am schițat atunci. Lucrările vizuale sunt bazate pe texturile organice pe care le-am catalogat, și propun o interpretare vizual-afectivă a lor. În gazon/gazon, repetiția aceluiași cuvânt creează un ritm plăcut estetic fără să creeze variație sau diferență, asta până când acest „același” nu se supra-aglomerează și nu se suprapune. Gazonul perfect, câmpurile nesfârșite de lavandă sau rapiță sunt imagini ale repetiției perfecte, lipsite de orice concept care să le confere o diferență și, chiar pot fi plăcute estetic, sunt mai degrabă o contra-imagine a naturii „negospodărite”, mult mai variată și neuniformă. gazon≠gazon explorează această idee de natură negospodărită și se bazează pe repetiție prin diferență. Aici am folosit denumirile plantelor de pe „pajiștile experimentale pentru polenizatori și Instagram” din Drumul Taberei. Există în lucrarea asta mai multe prototipuri de plante, fiecare cu atribute, forme și densități specifice, care amplasate într-un mod aleatoriu-controlat, caută să sugereze agitația, forfota, varietatea și diferența regăsită într-o pajiște cu flori de câmp sau un petic de pământ lăsat neîngrijit. În sfârșit, poemul aduce pe de-o parte o imagine a acestei lumi geometrizate, lipsite de haos, și pe de altă parte, oferă în oglindă o alternativă. În plus, continuă seria narațiunilor imaginare despre Drumul Taberei pornită în timpul rezidenței și abordează nevoia comunității de a interveni în personalizarea propriului spațiu și de a proteja creșterea spontană a vegetației ( coroi & dumitrescu).

**gazon means lawn in Romanian

The project grew out of the textures we had gathered during our residency in Drumul Taberei, from our wonderings through the neighbourhood and from some ideas we sketched back then. The visual works are based on the organic textures we've catalogued and they offer a visual-affective interpretation of them. In gazon/gazon, the repetition of the same word creates a pleasant aesthetic rhythm without introducing variations or difference, that is until this “sameness” doesn’t become over-saturated and doesn’t begin to overlap. The perfect lawn, the endless fields of lavender or rapeseed are images of perfect repetition, devoid of any concept that might bring about difference and, though aesthetically pleasing, they are rather counter-images of the “untended” nature, which is far more diverse and uneven. gazon≠gazon explores this idea of untamed nature and is build on repetition through difference. Here, we used the name of the plants found on the “Experimental meadows for pollinators and Instagram” in Drumul Taberei. The work includes several plant prototypes, each with its own attributes, forms and specific densities. Arranged in a randomly controlled manner, they aim to evoke the restlessness, bustle, variety and difference found in a wildflower meadow or a patch of unkept land. Finally, the poem offers, on the one hand, an image of this geometrized, chaos-free world and, on the other, it reflects, as in a mirror, an alternative. It also continues the series of imaginary narratives about Drumul Taberei that began during the residency, addressing the community’s need to intervene in the personalisation of their own space and to protect the spontaneous growth of vegetation.
