After Finland's independence from Russia in 1917, a movement for (now-Finnish) Åland's reunion with Sweden gathered steam. Islanders, who felt culturally Swedish, feared a threat to their language and culture from the Finnish national movement. Tensions rose: at one point Finland sent troops to detain leaders of the movement and Sweden responded by recalling its diplomats from Finland. The Parliament of Finland adopted an Autonomy Act for Åland in 1920, which the Ålanders refused to accept.

Cobbs said that although her sister was proud of her actions, she never let the walkout define her life. Barbara, she said, felt inspired by a higher power. "She thought the plan, so to speak, was given to her by God. She pretty much felt it was her duty."

In the company of two friends, Carl and José, I was embarking on a journey to the most remote pub in mainland Britain. Accessible only by sea ferry or by a two-day, 18-mile hike across the Scottish Highlands from the small settlement of Kinloch Hourn (or an even longer, 28-mile yomp from the hamlet of Glenfinnan), the Old Forge sits in the village of Inverie, on the southern coast of the Knoydart peninsula. "Walking in" to the pub is a rite of passage in the outdoors community, and one we were keen to tick off, thirsty in equal measure for adventure and the extreme satisfaction of a pint well earned.
