Happy Birthday, Béla!
Today plus 145 years ago, one of the most influential Hungarian composers was born. For the V4 String Quartet it is always a pleasure to play his music. Here in contrast, we are remembering the September 26th Concert in Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Bartók's Death in Márai Sándor Művelődési Ház in Budapest, with his String Quartet No. 3.

Less than an hour to go until our first concert in Bucharest — and it’s a full house at the Liszt Institute.

Tonight we bring the uncompromising, intimate world of György Kurtág to the stage: works for string quartet, along with selections from Signs, Games and Messages. Fragments, whispers, sudden flashes — music distilled to its purest form, where every gesture carries weight.

Grateful to share this Kurtág 100 celebration with a packed hall and such focused energy in the air. See you on stage.

🎶 Saturday night at MiraTone — the Visegrad Musical Bridge filled the Festetics Palace with music, people, and shared celebration.

Standing room only, a full stage, and an audience made up of smiling faces from all over the world — this was a closing to Saturday that truly felt like a celebration of togetherness. The Visegrad Musical Bridge concert brought musicians and listeners into one shared space, united by music and curiosity.

The evening featured two Hungarian premieres that placed the double bass in the spotlight: Daniel Rumler’s Caprice and Ilja Zeljenka’s Concertino, performed with brilliance by Ján Krigovský alongside the MiraTone Ensemble, led by the V4 String Quartet. Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances added rhythmic fire and color, setting the stage for what followed.

After the intermission, the concert reached its emotional peak with Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” — one of the most powerful and uncompromising works in all of chamber music. Performed by the MiraTone Ensemble comprised of our participants together with members of the National Youth Orchestra of Slovakia, the intensity, focus, and depth of commitment were extraordinary.

This concert was exactly what MiraTone stands for: musical dialogue between artists from all over the world, young artists and experienced musicians sharing the stage, and a community coming together through great music. A night to remember. 💛

☀️ Early morning in Budapest — while the city was still quiet, music had already begun at MiraTone! 🎶

The V4 String Quartet and László Borbély started their Thursday bright and early in the BMC - Budapest Music Center Library, diving straight into Bartók’s monumental Piano Quintet. The energy, focus, and excitement were palpable — a true meeting of musical minds preparing for what would later become the grand finale of MiraTone’s Closing Concert on Sunday night. 💫

✨ Ever since the founding of our quartet, August has always meant beautiful music, hard work, and a strong sense of community — and this year was no different.

We were delighted to return as the Ensemble in Residence of the MiraTone Festival and Academy in Budapest, performing in five inspiring concerts alongside wonderful musicians and giving master classes to participants from all over the world.

Today, we’re happy to share photos from our first performance of the 2025 edition, featuring two works that lie especially close to our hearts:
🎵 Ľudovít Rajter: _String Quartet No. 2_ (1943–1944)
🎵 Ernő Dohnányi: _String Quartet No. 2 in D-flat major_, Op. 15

The connection between Rajter and Dohnányi — friends in both Budapest and Bratislava — beautifully reflects our mission to bridge cultures and traditions within the V4 region.

Dohnányi’s quartet holds an even more personal meaning for us, as it was the very first piece we ever played together. Each time we return to it, we discover something new — another layer of depth, emotion, and craftsmanship from one of Hungary’s greatest composers.

The V4 String Quartet celebrates already 4 years together! From the very first rehearsal at the legendary Ferenc Liszt Academy, through the transformation of now a very successful MiraTone music festival, many and many masterclasses, to the concert back at the Academy in June this year, we have come a long way, and still so much to come.
