😮 You’re looking at the first images from the 3.2-gigapixel camera at the heart of the Vera Rubin Observatory — and in one single frame, millions of galaxies were discovered.

Built atop Cerro Pachón in Chile, the massive LSST camera snapped these test observations over 10 hours — capturing swirls of nebulae, dense galaxy clusters and over 2,000 previously unknown asteroids.

With a field of view wider than seven full moons and enough resolution to map the Southern sky every few nights, this is not just an image — it’s the dawn of a 10-year cosmic time-lapse.

From historic human landings like Apollo 11 to groundbreaking robotic missions like Luna 17, Chang'e-3, and the Surveyor missions (1-7). Each of these sites marks a milestone in humanity's exploration of the Moon. 🌍✨

Hubble recorded a supernova erupting behind the galaxy cluster Abell 370, with the cluster’s gravitational field acting as a lens and producing multiple views of the same event. The telescope captured the rare shock-cooling phase of a red supergiant roughly 500 times the Sun’s radius, showing its outer layers expanding rapidly in the first moments after the star’s core collapsed.

The observation delivers one of the clearest looks at the opening stage of a massive star’s death—an explosion bright enough to momentarily outshine an entire galaxy.

WOAH. 😮 Entire Solar Systems being dragged away from one Galaxy towards the other! #bosplanet Here’s what’s happening: ✨ These galaxies are interacting due to gravity, pulling streams of gas and stars out of each other. ✨ This interaction distorts their shapes and triggers waves of star formation as clouds of gas collapse under the tidal forces. ✨ IC 1559 is the smaller of the two, yet its gravitational pull is strong enough to strip material from the much larger NGC 169. Why does this matter? 🪐 Galactic interactions like this are key to how galaxies grow, merge, and evolve. In fact, our own Milky Way is on track to collide with the Andromeda Galaxy in about 4 billion years — a similar cosmic dance. Astronomy photos are like Onions 🧅🪐 Onions have layers. Astronomy photos have layers. If you looked into outer space with your naked eye, it might appear a bit duller than the astrophotography you’re used to seeing. That’s because those beautiful images often show many layers of light emitted at different wavelengths. By capturing and layering different light emissions, we can see more than what meets the eye! 👀 To demonstrate, this video shows different “layers” of Jupiter’s light. The first image is of Jupiter in the infrared, taken by Gemini North in Hawaiʻi, one half of Gemini Observatory. The following images taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show Jupiter in visible and ultraviolet light.
