Souq Waqif fiesta ends on high note

The Souq Waqif Celebrations 2015 concluded yesterday with the same fanfare that impressed spectators when it started on April 10.
Thousands of visitors witnessed a variety of activities that entertained both the young and the young at heart during the eight-day celebrations.
Two of the biggest attractions –the “Souq Waqif Wrestling Championship” exhibition matches featuring WWE wrestling superstars at Al Ahmed Square and performances of “Scooby-Doo! The Mystery of the Pyramid” at Al Rayyan Theatre – had made early curtain calls on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
Yesterday’s celebration started with a series of street performances.
The Souq Alley came alive around 4pm as performances by Alfonso Rios, Colour Brigade, and Toys Parade wowed the crowd, mostly children. Many visitors were thrilled to watch a rope walker make his way between two buildings.
Another attraction was a parade of stilt walkers and mirror men. Children and their parents rushed in to get a close-up view of the performers, who briefly stopped their street performances for selfies and photos.
The highlight of last night’s celebrations was a musical performance by Salman Zayman

Ashghal has announced a major traffic diversion near Barwa Village, on the main road between Doha and Al Wakrah.

The diversion is related to the construction of the Red Line section of Qatar Rail and other projects including an interchange.

Announcing this on Sunday, the Public Works Authority said the diversion would be in place starting from near the Barwa Village interchange to Al Wakrah roundabout.

Ashghal and Qatar Rail assessed the current road use before developing alternative routes, which would help reduce the impact of the diversion on the traffic flow.

The diversion will facilitate the construction work of the Doha Metro project being implemented by the Qatar Railways Company. The work will also allow the construction of interchange 27, one of four interchanges of the East Corridor Expressway project.

The diversion has been designed to ensure the safety of road users and traffic flow on the alternative road, according to an Ashghal communique.

The main road, consisting of three lanes in each direction, will be closed and diverted to an alternative road that has been built with as many lanes in each direction. A traffic light has also been installed to facilitate vehicular movement to and from Ras Abu Funtas Road (as shown in the map).

The traffic diversion will be implemented in two phases. Traffic will be diverted towards Al Wakrah starting from March 31. The diversion will then be extended to northbound lanes towards Doha on April 8.

The diversion will last until the last quarter of 2016.

Earlier this month, the left lane (fast lane) of the main road, northbound towards Al Wakrah, was closed to facilitate the opening of the temporary road for the diversion.

The East Corridor Expressway project is part of Ashghal’s vital expressway programme, and includes the construction of an approximately 11km-long dual carriageway. It consists of five lanes in each direction. The road extends from the west of the access to the Barwa development as far as Al Matar Street, south of the Air Force roundabout. It will create a new strategic link in the south area.

The government has eased visa restrictions for companies and is allowing them to recruit workers from countries of their choice, says Qatar Chamber (QC).

In other words, nationality-wise quota system in issuing work visas may not be in force any more.

The move aims to remove hindrances facing private businesses in their smooth operation and their ability to play a greater role in the national economy.

The Chamber said the Recruitment Committee at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs which clears work visas for companies is now taking a lenient view of visa requests.

A welcome development is that the Committee has a representative of the Chamber on it now to ensure that the private sector’s manpower needs are not ignored.

“Since then the Committee has been able to solve the woes of the companies related to work visas and the nationality of workers,” said Rashid Al Athba, a member of QC’s board.

He is the man who represents the private sector on the Recruitment Committee. He told Al Sharq that now the committee takes a lenient view of a company’s requests for the number of workers for different jobs and their nationality.

“Our presence in the Committee has made it take the problems of the private sector seriously,” Al Athba said.

“When the panel is convinced a firm needs that many workers and from so and so nationality, its visa requests are approved.”

Al Athba said this is part of the government’s plans to remove all hurdles in the way of the private sector and help it develop and play a much widened role in economic development.

He said The Emir, H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in his address to the Advisory Council early last month, promised a more proactive role for the private sector in national development and, as expected, it was coming true. the peninsula

The Prime Minister’s latest announcement that no government ministry or institution or agency funded by the state would set up a new company or business or expand any existing business without special permission from his office showed that the government is keen to encourage the private sector to play a major role in the economic development, said Al Athba.

He said tomorrow’s consultative meeting of the private sector with the Premier assumes much significance as whatever hurdles remain in the way of the sector’s progress would be discussed for removal.

2022 World Cup will be a ‘game-changer’

The 2022 Qatar World Cup will be “a game-changer,” tournament chief Hassan al-Thawadi declared Thursday, facing down the many sceptics voicing reservations about the gas-rich country hosting the sporting showpiece.
Al-Thawadi, appearing at a sports business conference in New York, was grilled on everything from corruption allegations do***ng FIFA’s pick of Qatar to worries that fans will not be able to get enough alcohol at the first World Cup in the Middle East.
Other questions focused on criticism of working conditions for migrant construction workers and a likely move in the calendar of the World Cup from the summer to the winter, a shift that has drawn howls from football leagues across the globe.
Al-Thawadi sent out a message of steely determination.
“We are going to be ready,” he said in an on-stage interview over 40 minutes, part of the “Leaders Sport Business Summit.”
“Hopefully with every day that people see progress on the ground, they’ll come round to the idea that the 2022 event is a game-changer.”

Qatar Rail, 2022 projects sustainable

Qatar is on track to ensure the overwhelming majority of the projects to be used in the 2022 FIFA World Cup will achieve world-class standards of sustainability.
“As many as 80% of the construction project activities until 2022 will be based on the principles and practice of sustainability,” said Dr Yousef al-Horr, founder and chairman, Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (Gord).
Dr al-Horr is a keynote speaker on day one of the MEED Qatar Projects conference organised in association with Ashghal (Public Works Authority), which opens at the Grand Hyatt Doha on March 10.
“My presentation will help business understand what the opportunities are in this area and what is needed including materials and systems to support our sustainability plans,” he explained.
Qatar is already demonstrating how it can successfully develop sustainable large-scale sports venues, Dr al-Horr pointed out.
