ROAD SPEED BREAKER CALCULATION
📐 Standard Dimensions:
• Height (H) = 75 mm
• Top Width (W) = 600 mm
• Slope = 1:10
• Total Length (L) = 2.1 m
🧮 Length Formula:
L = 2(10H) + W
L = 2(10 × 0.075) + 0.6
L = 2.1 m
📊 Design Check:
For V = 40 km/h, the calculated height ≈ 78 mm.
A 75 mm height may be adopted where permitted by the applicable road standard.
⚠️ Key Points:
✔ Proper warning signs
✔ Reflective markings
✔ Good night visibility
✔ Adequate drainage
✔ Follow local road authority standards

Different types of lintel beams
Hidden beam is a structural beam that is embedded within the thickness of a slab, so its depth is generally the same as the slab thickness or only slightly deeper. It is also called a concealed beam.
Main purpose
* Supports slab loads and transfers them to columns/walls.
* Provides additional stiffness to the slab.
* Helps support walls or partitions above.
* Keeps the ceiling flat and without a visible drop beam.
Example
If a slab is 200 mm thick, a hidden beam may be designed around 200–250 mm deep, depending on the structural design.
Important: The beam size, reinforcement, and concrete grade must be based on the structural engineer’s design—not decided on site.
A lintel beam is a horizontal structural member placed over openings such as doors, windows, and ventilators to support the load of the wall and roof/floor above and transfer it safely to the side walls.
Functions of a lintel beam
* Supports the masonry above openings.
* Transfers loads to the side walls.
* Prevents cracks around doors and windows.
* Improves the stability and strength of the structure.
Types of lintel beams
1. Timber lintel – Used in traditional or temporary structures.
2. Stone lintel – Used in stone masonry construction.
3. Brick lintel – Suitable for small openings and light loads.
4. Steel lintel – Used for heavy loads or wide openings.
5. Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) lintel – The most commonly used type in modern buildings due to its strength and durability.
6. Precast concrete lintel – Factory-made and installed on site for faster construction.
Typical RCC lintel details
* Width: Same as the wall thickness (e.g., 230 mm).
* Depth: Usually 100–200 mm, depending on the span and load.
* Bearing: At least 150 mm on each side of the opening.
Advantages
* High strength and durability.
* Economical and easy to construct.
* Fire-resistant and weather-resistant.
* Provides a stable base for masonry above openings.
In modern residential buildings, RCC lintel beams are the most widely used because they are strong, durable, and easy to integrate with reinforced concrete construction.
