20 de Junho de 1540: O Voo de João Torto

Muito antes dos aviões cruzarem os céus, houve quem tentasse transformar o sonho de voar em realidade. Reza a lenda que, neste dia, em 1540, João Torto se lançou do cimo da Sé de Viseu.

O enfermeiro viseense desenhou um engenho complexo, com asas inspiradas nas aves e duas sobrepostas na cabeça. Aquela que é uma das mais antigas tentativas de voo conhecidas em Portugal terminou tragicamente após escassos metros, mas o seu nome ficou para sempre gravado na história.

Mais do que o desfecho, recordamos hoje a audácia e o pioneirismo de quem se atreveu a desafiar a gravidade e os limites do impossível.

June 20th, 1540: The Flight of João Torto

Long before airplanes crossed the skies, there were those who tried to turn the dream of flying into reality. Legend has it that on this day, in 1540, João Torto launched himself from the top of the Viseu Cathedral.

The nurse from Viseu designed a complex apparatus with bird-inspired wings and two overlapping gear pieces on his head. What stands as one of the earliest known flight attempts in Portugal ended tragically after just a few meters, but his name was forever etched into history.

Rather than the tragic outcome, today we remember the audacity and pioneering spirit of one who dared to challenge gravity and the limits of the impossible.

17 de Junho: O Triunfo da Travessia Aérea do Atlântico Sul

Hoje celebramos uma das maiores efemérides da história aeronáutica: a data que marca a conclusão da Primeira Travessia Aérea do Atlântico Sul, em 1922.

Após uma odisseia de 8.300 km, Sacadura Cabral e Gago Coutinho chegaram ao Rio de Janeiro a bordo do Santa Cruz. Mais do que uma conquista épica, este foi um triunfo da ciência: os aviadores portugueses provaram ao mundo a eficácia dos seus métodos de navegação astronómica, adaptando o sextante para o uso aéreo — uma inovação que revolucionou a aviação global.

A viagem, realizada no ano do centenário da Independência do Brasil, não só uniu dois continentes, como fortaleceu os laços entre Portugal e o povo brasileiro, demonstrando uma audácia técnica que ainda hoje nos inspira.

Neste dia, homenageamos o legado destes pioneiros e de todos os profissionais que, com rigor e coragem, continuam a elevar a aviação portuguesa.

June 17th: The Triumph of the South Atlantic Aerial Crossing

Today we celebrate one of the greatest milestones in aeronautical history: the date marking the completion of the First Aerial Crossing of the South Atlantic in 1922.

Following an 8,300 km odyssey, Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho arrived in Rio de Janeiro aboard the Santa Cruz. More than an epic achievement, this was a triumph of science: the Portuguese aviators proved to the world the effectiveness of their astronomical navigation methods by adapting the sextant for aerial use—an innovation that revolutionized global aviation.

The journey, undertaken during the centennial year of Brazil's Independence, not only united two continents but also strengthened the bonds between Portugal and the Brazilian people, demonstrating a technical audacity that continues to inspire us today.

On this day, we honor the legacy of these pioneers and of all the professionals who, with rigor and courage, continue to elevate Portuguese aviation..

6 de junho de 1944 | Dia D

Há 82 anos, no Dia D, o Douglas C-47 "Dakota" foi determinante no transporte de milhares de paraquedistas para a Normandia, marcando o início do fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Após o conflito, estas aeronaves cumpriram novas missões. Em Portugal, foram fundamentais tanto na Força Aérea Portuguesa, onde desempenharam diversas funções operacionais, como na génese da TAP, fundada em 1945 por Humberto Delgado. Adaptados para o transporte de passageiros, os aviões da companhia ligaram Lisboa ao mundo, inaugurando em 1946 a histórica Linha Aérea Imperial para Angola e Moçambique.

No Museu do Ar, preservamos a memória desta aeronave extraordinária. Entre o nosso espólio, destaca-se o exemplar que pertence à TAP, unindo a história militar global, o serviço prestado à Força Aérea e os primeiros passos da aviação comercial portuguesa.

June 6, 1944 | D day

82 years ago, on D-Day, the Douglas C-47 "Dakota" played a decisive role in transporting thousands of paratroopers to Normandy, marking the beginning of the end of World War II.

After the conflict, these aircraft embarked on new missions. In Portugal, they were fundamental both to the Portuguese Air Force, where they performed various operational roles, and to the genesis of TAP, founded in 1945 by Humberto Delgado. Adapted for passenger transport, the company's aircraft connected Lisbon to the world, inaugurating the historic Imperial Air Route to Angola and Mozambique in 1946.

At the Air Museum (Museu do Ar), we preserve the memory of this extraordinary aircraft. Among our collection, we highlight the iconic plane that belongs to TAP, uniting global military history, the service provided to the Air Force, and the first steps of Portuguese commercial aviation.

Each child sees the world as an undiscovered adventure - and in the Air Museum there is no shortage of stories, aircraft and experiences to awaken the imagination.

Throughout the year, we receive schools of all age groups on guided tours adapted to each level of education, promoting learning in a dynamic and engaging way.

On this special day, we invite families and schools to visit the Air Museum and embark on a journey through the history of national aeronautics. 💙✈️

No passado dia 23 de maio, o grupo dos Metralhas, constituído por oficiais da especialidade TMAEQ e sargentos e praças da especialidade MARME, realizou uma visita guiada ao Museu do Ar, no âmbito do # # # Encontro Anual Metralha.

A visita proporcionou a oportunidade de conhecer e valorizar o património histórico da aviação militar exposto, promovendo momentos de interesse, convívio e partilha entre todos os participantes.

F**a, assim, o registo da passagem deste grupo pelo Museu do Ar.

On May 23rd, the Metralhas group, composed of officers from the TMAEQ specialty and sergeants and enlisted personnel from the MARME specialty, took part in a guided visit to the Air Museum as part of the # # # Annual Metralha Meeting.

The visit provided an opportunity to discover and appreciate the historical heritage of military aviation on display, promoting moments of interest, fellowship and shared experiences among all participants.

This marks the group’s visit to the Air Museum.

✈️ Exposição Itinerante: "Grandes Viagens Aeronáuticas dos Portugueses"
O Museu do Ar tem o prazer de levar a exposição "Grandes Viagens Aeronáuticas dos Portugueses" até ao Centro Cultural de Celorico da Beira.

Esta mostra presta homenagem aos pioneiros da aviação nacional e aos feitos que marcaram a história da aeronáutica, destacando a épica Primeira Travessia Aérea do Atlântico Sul, protagonizada por Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral.

A exposição encontra-se patente ao público até ao próximo dia 22 de junho de 2026, no âmbito das comemorações do Feriado Municipal.

Convidamos todos a visitar esta mostra e a celebrar o legado da aviação portuguesa.

✈️ Traveling Exhibition: "Great Aeronautical Journeys of the Portuguese"
The Air Museum (Museu do Ar) is pleased to present the exhibition "Great Aeronautical Journeys of the Portuguese" at the Celorico da Beira Cultural Centre.

This exhibition pays tribute to the pioneers of national aviation and the achievements that shaped aeronautical history, with a special focus on the epic First Aerial Crossing of the South Atlantic, led by aviators Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral.

The exhibition is open to the public until June 22, 2026, as part of the Municipal Holiday commemorations.

We invite everyone to visit this exhibition and celebrate the legacy of Portuguese aviation.
