A male white stork named Klepetan flew over 13,000 kilometres every year from South Africa to a small Croatian village just to return to his injured mate Malena, who had been shot by a hunter and could never fly again. For 19 consecutive years, he made the round trip from Cape Town to Brodski Varoš in eastern Croatia, arriving each spring to the same rooftop nest where Malena waited, tended by retired janitor Stjepan Vokić. 🦢❤️🌍

Vokić found Malena in 1993 with a shattered wing and built her a nest on his chimney, where she and Klepetan raised 66 chicks together over two decades despite spending every winter apart. Klepetan's route, tracked via a ring transmitter, took him over Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, and along the African coast to South Africa, with hunters in Lebanon posing a real danger to him on every migration.

White storks are not typically monogamous for life, making Klepetan's two-decade devotion to a bird who could never migrate with him a phenomenon that scientists and conservationists describe as extraordinary. Their love story became a symbol of loyalty in Croatia and around the world, with Malena's passing in July 2021 prompting an outpouring of grief across the country and internationally.
