Five years after its original release, HEAVY/OCEAN are revisiting H/O with a special, limited-edition vinyl pressing, marking half a decade since one of the defining releases of the band’s career.

Originally released on August 20, 2021, H/O captured a pivotal point in HEAVY/OCEAN’s evolution — the moment when a project born in the confines of a garage began to take on a more assured, mature and fully realized musical identity.

Heavy Ocean push listeners as much as they do themselves but with the immediacy and charm, they’ve created something that is easily enjoyable. Although influenced by bands like Russian Circles, Bossk and Deftones, they try to add their own signature to the post-metal genre.

To mark its fifth anniversary, H/O is now being reissued on 12-inch, 140g vinyl, in two limited variants created with collectors in mind: Crystal and Splatter.

Cansei de Ser Sexy "Reissue"

From São Paulo, Brazil comes CSS, the first South American band Sub Pop has foisted upon the global marketplace. Cansei de Ser Sexy, Portuguese for “Tired of Being Sexy,” is improbably, unbelievably and nearly eponymously their debut. It is a thick, pulsating thing full of haphazard synths (“Alala”) and a come-on of call and response that tears down any attempt at posturing (“Art Bitch,” “Patins”). It is equal parts rock mantra and throwback into something new, transcending boundaries of genre and geography. It careers full speed into dance territory, into the unknown and untouched, to emerge all hot and bothered with wild electro-rock.

Pretension? Absent. Friction? Probable. They are the un-pretension: unfinished, exposed, and throwing all they have right at you. It is quick, tightly-wound, unfastened and supreme. Not a sneer but a giggle. To paraphrase from the Portuguese: “Not only music, but a new way to live with it. An unfinished group that, unlike preserving itself until getting ‘to the point,’ was bravely showing off, turning everything into style.” Fashion. Art. Design. Cinema. Panties thrown and received. Micro shorts and dirty legs. How does it happen? It happens like this…

The sixth studio album Dinosaur Jr. have recorded in the 20 years since their triumphal rebirth. There have been several live and/or closet cleaning collections to keep us punters sated for the five years since Sweep It Into Space, but there is nothing quite like having a full slab of new Dino tunes to fry your ears. And There Near has all k***s set to Extra Crispy.

Created in short, intense bursts over the course of a year at Amherst’s Bisquiteen Studio, There Near was recorded almost entirely by Dino’s core trio — king of the thunder tubs, Murph, human tornado Lou Barlow on bass/vocals and the inimitable J Mascis on guitar/vocals — with a bit of piano and organ work by local master musician, Ken Mauri. And the album roars from start to finish.

Trying to define the essence of Dino’s sound is never easy. It’s an instantly recognizable blend of loose vocals, sharp guitars and an animalistic rhythm section, but these parts combine into a whole far more magical and exciting than its components. In strict rock-write terms, you might call the approach “post-core power balladeering,” but what use is that? Dinosaur Jr. invented their formula for noise/pop jiggering around the same time Husker Dü were trying out some of the same ideas, all of which got made popular by a band they inspired called Nirvana. But that’s an old and much-told tale.

Andrew Bird continues a year-long celebration behind the 20th Anniversary of his, era-defining album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs. Recorded and scrapped three times in three different places, it is the album that cemented his enigmatic style into the indie music canon, shaping the sound of the moment and inspiring decades of imitation.

Born from a barn in rural Illinois,The Mysterious Production of Eggs crystallized the ingenious live-looping, poetic whimsy, whistling melodies and emotional connection, "I was playing all day and night in a kind of fever, throwing in pop, jazz, violin, guitars and polyrhythms, while wrestling with some demons," says Andrew Bird.

Absolute gem of an album from Die Spitz on Third Man. Ferocious, versatile, raw, and unapologetic. It has the same thrill as hearing Hole for the first time.

When the Venn diagram of passion, friendship, identity, and artistry collide, it can feel as if fighting words are spitting from your veins. And as postmodern society crumbles, Die Spitz giddily bounce between a dozen different ways to push back. If the world of rock music were an ice cream shop, the Austin quartet have sampled each flavor, flipped the freezer over, and started dancing with the employees they helped unionize.

On their debut album, Something to Consume (via Third Man Records), Ava Schrobilgen, Chloe De St. Aubin, Ellie Livingston, and Kate Halter fight against the inescapable consumption that surrounds life. "There's a political side to it, but addiction and love can also be all-consuming," Livingston says. And as the foursome trade off instruments, swapping songwriting and vocal duties, and generating powerful songwriting in concussive bursts, Die Spitz have created their own little pocket of the world where we can all stand on the edge together.

You Say I Romanticize

Sweeping Promises’ introduction to the global punk underground was their debut album, Hunger for a Way Out, which ended up being one of the breakout successes in music during pandemic lockdown. In 2023, they followed up with Good Living is Coming for You, a satirical, hyper-critical rebuke of capitalism that made Album of the Year lists for Pitchfork, NPR, Paste, and BBC, just to name a few. Bassist/vocalist Lira Mondal and guitarist Caufield Schnug decided to tilt their approach a few degrees forward on their third LP.

The visceral songwriting on You Say I Romanticize features an equally visceral musical approach. Sweeping Promises brought live drummer Spenser Gralla into the recording sessions to give the songs a similar urgency to their live show. The frenzy of its ex*****on also materializes in Mondal’s vocal performances.

A shadow side exists along with Sweeping Promises’ love of their artistic community—borne of weirdos channeling their “outcast” status into vibrant art and punk rock music. You Say I Romanticize takes the ethos Mondal and Schnug have developed and explores the obsessive, fanatical aspects of being ostracized and isolated by mainstream society.

Based in New York, YHWH Nailgun have built a reputation on music that is visceral, immediate, and impossible to neatly categorize. What began in 2020 as the raw collision between vocalist Zack Borzone and drummer Sam Pickard has since evolved into a full four-piece alongside guitarist/producer Saguiv Rosenstock and synth player Jack Tobias. Their new album Magazine further sharpens the band’s uncompromising vision.

Across 10 tracks that unfold in just 11 minutes, Magazine pushes YHWH Nailgun’s sound into even more skeletal and immediate territory. Opening with the slow fade-in of Ghost of Love, the record feels less like a conventional album than a fragment pulled from an endless transmission. The band balances chaos with precision: frantic guitars, bruising percussion, air-raid synths, and Borzone’s now-unmasked vocals, delivered with a newfound clarity that brings his surreal, religiously charged imagery into sharper focus.

17 years into an impressive career, Citizen still feel like underdogs who have never quite fit in. The band’s persistent sonic evolution and refusal to make the same record twice has earned them a reputation as one of the most consistently captivating bands in modern rock music. But following your own path often means walking it alone, and their unlikely rise from a band of Toledo high schoolers to long-running headliners capable of selling out shows around the world has been hard-earned. It's precisely this commitment to their craft that has led to their new album, Halcyon Blues. It’s a dynamic and confident culmination of all that’s come before, making it crystal clear that for all their sonic restlessness, Citizen have always known exactly who they are.

Where past Citizen albums have felt like direct responses to the preceding release, Halcyon Blues sounds like the group wrapping their arms around their entire catalog and carrying it forward. Recorded by Kerekes in his home studio in Toledo, then mixed by Tom Lorde-Alge (U2, Weezer, Blink182), the record taps into the urgency and ferocity of Citizen’s early albums while embracing the epic scope and undeniable hooks of their more recent work.

Phoebe Bridgers returns with her highly anticipated third solo record “Lost Weekend”, her first solo album in 6 years.

Beloved in equal measure for her deceptively subtle voice and her meticulous, incisive lyrics, Phoebe Bridgers’ solo records Stranger in the Alps (2017) and Punisher (2020) have been accompanied by a number of collaborations, including the supergroup boygenius, with whom Bridgers won three Grammy Awards for 2023’s the record.

Her songs are hallmarked by a kind of intimacy that’s hard-found in contemporary music, and scale between the macro and the micro with an ease that’s matched only by her towering, prodigious way with words.

📍Fears is the project of Irish artist, musician and producer Constance Keane, where electronic minimalism, acoustic fragments and spectral vocals converge into something quietly unsettling and deeply intimate. Her work inhabits the space between music and visual art, using restraint as much as sound to explore subjects that are intensely personal but rarely feel confined to the self.

Across Oíche (2021) and affinity, Fears has developed a singular language of atmosphere and emotional tension. Her debut found its way onto year-end lists from The Guardian, CLASH and the Irish Independent, while affinity — recorded between Dublin, London and New York and featuring collaborations with Ailbhe Reddy, Jemima Coulter, Aga Ujma and Sophie Gwen Williams.

Beyond Fears, Keane is a founding member of feminist punk band M(h)aol and works across fashion and visual culture, further expanding a practice that refuses to draw clear lines between disciplines. Her commitment to reshaping the industry extends behind the scenes as co-founder of Tulle Collective. Born out of a direct response to the lack of women-led record labels, Tulle, merges DIY values with expert industry guidance, creating a supportive network for underrepresented artists.

📍Opening the night is Laura Olim, her solo project exists somewhere between bedroom experimentation and emotional confession. Emerging from a desire to take complete control of her creative process, she began producing her own music as a way of learning by doing—building songs from the ground up and embracing the imperfections, surprises, and discoveries that come with it.

Rooted in a DIY approach, her music moves freely between genres and influences, guided more by instinct than convention. Each release becomes an opportunity to explore new sonic landscapes, blending intimate songwriting with textured production, raw energy, and a willingness to experiment.
