A locking plate is not simply a stronger plate.

With a conventional plate, stability comes from compressing the plate against the bone. With a locking plate, each screw locks into the plate itself, creating a fixed-angle construct.

That means stability does not rely on plate-to-bone compression in the same way, which can help preserve the blood supply beneath the plate.

It is a different fixation strategy, chosen for the case in front of you.

Laterolateral (side-to-side) intestinal anastomosis: a single firing, a complete seal

Intestinal resection and anastomosis is one of the most technically demanding procedures in small animal practice, and the instrument in your hand can make the difference between an uneventful recovery and dehiscence.

The gastrointestinal anastomosis linear cutter (GIA) does in one firing what manual suturing takes multiple steps to achieve: it transects the tissue and applies a double-staggered staple row to both luminal edges at once, creating an immediate haemostatic seal.

What the literature shows:

White (2008): 15 dogs, mean anastomosis time of 7.7 minutes, no intraoperative complications, all patients recovered from surgery.
Jardel and colleagues (École Nationale Vétérinaire d'Alfort, 2011): 30 dogs operated by supervised junior residents with limited prior training. Mean duration 15 ± 12 minutes, 25 of 30 uneventful recoveries, one anastomotic leakage. Fast and safe even in non-expert hands following appropriate training.

Genoni and colleagues (2024): endovascular GIA used safely in dogs up to 10 kg and cats, across five referral institutions and 25 patients, with a median follow-up of 126 days and no major complications.

Ref. QAB803 (80 × 3.8 mm), for longer resections and larger-calibre gastrointestinal tissue

Both feature a double-staggered staple row, an integrated scalpel blade, a retractable handle with audible locking mechanism, and an anti-misfire safety system. A cartridge is included with each instrument, and sterile reloads are available separately (Ref. GK553 and Ref. QB803).
