Ao fim de cinco edições inesquecíveis, o Sagres Surf Culture termina a sua aventura. Foi um sonho bonito que partilhámos com muita e boa gente, a quem estamos e estaremos eternamente agradecidos. Obrigado aos nossos convidados e ao nosso público; na verdade sentimos que todos, sem distinções e fronteiras, fizeram parte do mesmo, partilhando um sentimento único de tradução impossível. Isso, para nós, tem outro nome : surf.

Agradecemos ainda a todas as empresas, parceiros e entidades que nos apoiaram, em particular à Câmara Municipal de Vila do Bispo que ajudou a tornar a edição de 2016 memorável e ao Memmo Baleeira Hotel e ao seu staff, sempre incansável na ajuda ao longo destes anos. Obrigado ainda às marcas Nixon, RVCA, Vans, Rhythm e Fly Black Bird.

Às gentes de Sagres, de Vila do Bispo e do Algarve, o nosso especial agradecimento, por nos terem recebido tão bem.

Numa era de factos alternativos e pós-verdade esperamos, com as nossas palestras e conversas, ter contribuído para a construção de uma memória clara sobre a cultura de surf, em toda a sua autenticidade, profundidade e diversidade.
Que a reflexão que fizemos em Sagres continue a servir para nos mobilizarmos activamente para as questões ambientais e de sustentabilidade absolutamente cruciais nos dias que correm. Que as exposições tenham inspirado novos artistas e a troca de ideias aberto caminhos criativos nas mais diversas áreas.

E, sobretudo, que a energia que todos sentimos e que nos ligou a esta magnífica corrente nos acompanhe em novas viagens, projectos e lugares.

Esperamos que tenham desfrutado tanto quanto nós. Esta foi a melhor surfada dos últimos anos. E ainda bem que estivemos todos juntos na água

After five unforgettable events, our adventure is over. It was a beautiful dream that we shared with many good people, to whom we are and will be eternally grateful. We wish to thank our guests and public; we truly feel that everybody was part of this, with no boundaries or distinctions, sharing a unique feeling which is impossible to convey. This feeling, for us, has another name: surf.

We would also like to thank all the companies, partners and entities that supported us, in particular Vila do Bispo City Council, which helped make the 2016 event so memorable, as well as the Memmo Baleeira Hotel and staff, always tireless in their help over the years . Our thanks also go to the brands Nixon, RVCA, Vans, Rhythm and Fly Black Bird.

Our special thanks go to the people of Sagres, Vila do Bispo and the Algarve, for giving us such a warm welcome.

In an era of alternative facts and post-truth, we hope that through our presentations and conversations we contributed to building a clear memory of surf culture in all its authenticity, profundity and diversity.
May our Sagres reflections continue to help in actively mobilizing us for the environmental and sustainability issues that are absolutely crucial in this day and age. We hope the exhibitions inspired new artists and the exchange of ideas, opening creative pathways to the most diverse areas.

Above all, may the energy that we all felt, connecting us to this magnificent current, stay with us in new travels, projects and places.

We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. This was the best surfing we had in recent years. And it was great to be in the water together with you all ❤️

Rusty Miller nasceu na Califórnia em 1943 e cresceu para o surf em Encinitas. Ao longo da sua juventude bateu vários recordes competitivos e participou no Circuito Mundial de Surf, tendo sido finalista do Duke Kahanamoku Invitational por duas vezes. Foi também um dos mais proeminentes big-riders norte-americanos. Tem um bacharelato em História pela universidade de San Diego, e sempre foi um interessado por arte e política. Navegou pelo Taiti, Nova Zelândia, Japão, Austrália, Médio Oriente e Mediterrâneo. Viveu em Kauai antes de se mudar para Sydney, na Austrália, país onde ainda reside. Foi um dos pioneiros de Uluwatu, em Bali, Indonésia. Tem trabalhado em Byron Bay como instrutor de surf desde o começo dos anos ’70. É autor do foto-livro “Turning Point: Surf Portraits and Stories from Bells to Byron 1970-1971” (2013). Participou em vários filmes : “60: Gun Ho!” (1963), “Angry Sea” (1963), “Golden Breed” (1968), “Full Cycle” (1994) e “Powerglide” (1995).

Rusty Miller was born in California in 1943 and grew into surfing in Encinitas. Throughout his youth he set several competitive records and took part in the World Tour, and was twice a finalist at the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational. He was also one of the most prominent US big-riders. Rusty holds a BA in History from the University of San Diego, and has always been interested in art and politics. He sailed through Tahiti, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Miller lived in Kauai before moving to Sydney, Australia, a country where he still resides. He was one of the pioneers at Uluwatu in Bali, Indonesia and has worked in Byron Bay as a surf instructor since the early 70s. Rusty Miller is the author of the photo-book "Turning Point: Surf Portraits and Stories from Bells to Byron 1970-1971" (2013). He participated in several films: "60: Gun Ho" (1963), "Angry Sea" (1963), "Golden Breed" (1968), "Full Cycle" (1994), and "Powerglide" (1995).

Sancho Rodriguez é natural de Irun, vila fronteiriça situada no País Basco espanhol a escassos quilómetros de França. Foi a belíssima costa basca que inspirou o seu estilo de vida. Graças ao seu irmão Telmo apanhou a sua primeira onda aos nove anos de idade. Aos catorze conheceu os seus amigos Paco, Peta e Poti, e os seus tios mais velhos Jos, Kakas e Iñigo que levaram este grupo de jovens surfistas à aventura no seu Renault 5. Passo a passo, veio a descoberta das melhores ondas bascas – Hendaye, Guethary, Lafitenia e Mundaka. Depois, as influências cinematográficas como “Endless Summer”, filme visto graças ao seu amigo da Cornualha Roger Mansfield e a inspiração de “Litmus”, de Andrew Kidman. A forma do seu futuro estilo de vida começou então a desenhar-se.

Sancho Rodriguez organiza o Surfilmfestibal Donostia San Sebastian desde 2003. Este é maior evento de cultura do surf da Europa e o mais antigo festival de cinema de surf do mundo. Realiza-se anualmente na fascinante cidade de Donostia - San Sebastian. Para além de uma programação repleta de filmes de surf, o evento conta com exposições, ações sobre sustentabilidade e concertos. O carisma do Surfilm Festibal e a qualidade da sua programação tornaram o evento global e num verdadeiro ponto de encontro para todo o mundo do surf.

Sancho Rodriguez was born in Irun, a border town in Spanish Basque Country, just a few kilometers from France. It was the beautiful Basque coast that inspired Sancho's lifestyle. Thanks to his brother, Telmo, he caught his first wave at nine years old. At 14, he met his friends Paco, Peta, and Poti, as well as his older uncles, Jos, Kaka's, and Iñigo, who would lead this group of young surfers to adventure in their Renault 5. Step by step, they discovered the best Basque waves: Hendaye, Guéthary, Lafitenia and Mundaka. Then, through cinematographic influences like "Endless Summer", which he saw thanks to his friend Roger Mansfield in Cornwall, and the inspiration of Andrew Kidman's "Litmus", his future lifestyle began to take form.

Sancho Rodriquez has been organizing the San Sebastian Surfilm Festival since 2003. It is the biggest surf-culture event in Europe and the world's oldest surf film festival. It takes place in the beautiful city of Donostia - San Sebastian. Apart from the lineup of surfing films, the event hosts expositions, sustainability actions, and concerts. The charisma of the Surfilm Festibal and the quality of its lineup have turned it into a world-class event and a real meeting point for the surfing world.

Convidado Sagres Surf Culture 2016 # Sandow Birk

Sandow Birk é natural de Los Angeles (EUA) e tem um bacharelato pelo Otis/Parson's Art Institute. O seu trabalho incide sobre a vida contemporânea com especial enfoque nos problema sociais, na cidade, no graffiti, no debate político, na guerra e nas viagens. O surf e o skate têm sido temas recorrentes do seu trabalho. Fez trabalho comissariado na Cidade do México para estudar pinturas de murais, teve uma bolsa Guggenheim e uma Bolsa Fulbright para pintar no Rio de Janeiro. Em 1999 foi distinguido com uma bolsa Gretty na área da pintura, tendo-lhe sido também atribuída uma bolsa da Cidade de Los Angeles (COLA) em 2001. Em 2007 foi artista residente no Instituto Smithsonian em Washington e no Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris em 2008. O seu projecto mais recente é uma reflexão sobre o Corão ilustrada com cenas da vida contemporânea norte-americana. Sandow é representado pela Galeria Koplin del Rio em Los Angeles, pela Galeria Catharine Clark Gallery em San Francisco, e pela Galeria P.P.O.W em Nova Iorque.

Sandow Birk was born in Los Angeles (USA) and holds a bachelor's degree from Otis/Parson's Art Institute. His work focuses on contemporary life with special emphasis on social issues, the city, graffiti, political debate, wars, and travel. Surfing and skating have been recurrent themes in his work. He did commissioned work in Mexico City studying mural paintings, was a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fulbright Scholar painting in Rio de Janeiro. In 1999 he was awarded a Gretty scholarship for painting, having also been awarded a grant from the City of Los Angeles (COLA) in 2001. In 2007 he was a resident artist at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington and in 2008 at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. His most recent project is a reflection on the Qur’an illustrated with scenes from contemporary American life. Sandow is managed by the Koplin del Rio Gallery in Los Angeles, the Catharine Clark Gallery Gallery in San Francisco, and the P.P.O.W Gallery in New York.

Músico, realizador, escritor e shaper nascido em Nova Gales do Sul, na Austrália, Andrew Kidman é autor de uma das mais primorosas obras cinematográficas do surf (“Litmus”, 1996). Kidman começou por uma abordagem mais competitiva ao surf até ter conhecido Wayne Lynch e Dave Parmenter, personalidades cuja influência marcou definitivamente o rumo da sua vida, marcada por uma linha vincadamente alternativa e contra-cultura, não só a nível da sua produção criativa como ao nível do design de pranchas. Na era dos vídeos de surf punk com consumo pop “Litmus” ofereceu uma visão profunda, experimentalista e, do ponto de vista estético, radicalmente diferente da oferta que estava então disponível. Depois de “Litmus”, Kidman lançou “Glass Love” (2005) e “Last Hope” (2009), mantendo a sua abordagem única – onde a sonoridade tem um papel especial - que inspirou gerações. Em 2013 lançou o livro “Single – Studies of The Movement From the Stephanie Gilmore, Spirit of Akasha Sessions”.

A musician, director, writer, and shaper, born in New South Wales, Australia, Andrew Kidman is the author of one of the most exquisite films on surfing ("Litmus", 1996). Kidman began with a more competitive approach to surf until he met Wayne Lynch and Dave Parmenter, people whose influence definitely left their mark on the course of his life, marked by a distinctly alternative and counter-culture direction, not only in terms of creative output, but also when it came to surfboard design. In an era of punk surf videos for pop consumption, "Litmus" offered an insightful, experimentalist point of view, in its aesthetics radically different from everything else available on offer. After "Litmus," Kidman released "Glass Love" (2005) and "Last Hope" (2009), keeping his unique approach—where sound plays a special role—which inspired generations. In 2013 he released the book “Single – Studies of The Movement From the Stephanie Gilmore, Spirit of Akasha Sessions”.

Nascido no Rio de Janeiro em 1967, Júlio Adler queria ser futebolista do Flamengo mas acabou antes por envergar a lycra de competição na água onde competiu com os melhores surfistas do Brasil e do mundo no Circuito Mundial de Surf. Campeão Carioca em 1990, desde cedo que o seu olhar observador, acutilante e singular sobre o surf levaram-no à escrita, edição e realização, formas de expressão favoritas para um criador e devorador de conhecimento insaciável cujo trabalho nos brinda com constantes referências à literatura, à música e ao cinema que o tornam num dos mais profundos e singulares criadores de conteúdo do planeta surf. Colaborador de longa data da SurfPortugal Mag, cronista da Revista HARDCORE , editor da obra-prima “Fábio Fabuloso”, produtor de programas para o Canal OFF, co-autor da websérie Series Fecham, Júlio mantém ainda o seu blogue, enciclopédia de sabedoria e bom gosto. Júlio Adler é referência maior de surf pensado e falado na língua portuguesa – e não só.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1967, Júlio Adler wanted to play football for Flamengo, but he ended up wearing competition vest in the water, where he competed against the best surfers from Brazil and the world at the World Surfing Tour. Carioca Champion in 1990, from an early age his observing, penetrating, and singular point of view on surfing led him to writing, editing, and production, preferred means of expression for a creator and insatiable devourer of knowledge whose work constantly brings references to literature, music, and cinema, making him one of the planet's most profound and unique surf content creators. A long time contributor to SURFPortugal magazine, columnist for Hardcore magazine, editor of the masterpiece "Fabio Fabuloso," producer of programs for Canal OFF, co-author of the webseries "Séries Fecham," Júlio also maintains his blog, an encyclopedia wisdom and good taste. Júlio Adler is one of the greats of surf, as thought and spoken in Portuguese—and beyond.

Wolfgang Bloch nasceu no Equador, onde descobriu o surf e a linha de costa que inspirou o seu trabalho. Este inspira-se no mar, no seu poder e beleza hipnótica, sendo as suas composições inspiradas pela essência dessa placidez, ainda que recheadas de elementos que introduzem complexidade e profundidade a esta visão aparentemente linear. Definido como “intenso, dramático, instável”, o seu trabalho aplica ainda materiais que refletem a sua complexa postura como artista. O seu trabalho foi exibido em galerias e museus um pouco por todo o mundo, sendo também publicado em revistas e livros, um dos quais da sua autoria - "Wolfgang Bloch: The Colors of Coincidence". O livro foi desenhado por David Carson e escrito por Mike Stice. Bloch vive actualmente no Sul da Califórnia.

Wolfgang Bloch was born in Ecuador, where he discovered surfing and the coastline that inspired his work. This work is inspired by the sea, its power and hypnotic beauty, its compositions inspired by the essence of that placidity, although filled with elements that bring complexity and depth into this seemingly straightforward vision. Described as "intense, dramatic, unstable," his work also uses materials which reflect his complex stance as an artist. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world, and also published in magazines and books, one of them authored by himself—"Wolfgang Bloch: The Colors of Coincidence." The book was designed by David Carson and written by Mike Stice. Bloch currently lives in Southern California.
