Founder of the legendary Harmonie Park label, Rick Wade has spent decades shaping the underground through his productions and DJ sets around the world, always guided by feeling, patience and musical storytelling.

With over 30 years in this industry I’ve seen everything and everyone, q***r people, women, men, Black, white, Asian, playing, dancing and promoting. The truth is that there are good and bad people everywhere.

In the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s there was someone very important here called Manuel Reis, who managed to bring different communities together and break barriers like no one else, creating spaces where people didn’t turn against each other. Places that helped shape a more open and inclusive nightlife culture in Lisbon.

These days a new generation of promoters seems more interested in dividing the scene and rewriting the past, turning what used to be a real community into groups opposing one another, talking all the time about “safe places” for minorities.

The moment people are in environments where drugs and alcohol are being consumed, it stops being a completely safe place for minorities or not.
Messages about “safe spaces” that ignore this reality often feel like the biggest hypocrisy in this industry, mostly designed to make venues look good.

The real conversation we should be having is about the abuse of substance consumption, because it plays a major role in the disrespect and abuse that can happen from all sides. If we truly want the whole community, not just specific groups, to feel safer in nightlife, that’s the issue we need to address openly.

Let’s celebrate mental health.
