HONORABLE MENTION

Saint John the Baptist celebrations (June 24th) are among the largest and most vivid pilgrimage festivals in Cape Verde Islands. The syncretic feast mix paganism and Christianity. Alongside the catholic celebrations, the party is celebrated with colors, hypnotic drum rhythms, fire worship, and dances that resemble fertility. Streets are decorated with small colored flags. Rosaries are made using peanuts, popcorn, and crepe paper. Miniature boats are built to navigate on the streets. Women use colorful handkerchiefs on their heads to avoid the dust from the dry land. The flowers used to decorate the saint are a chromatic procession that reveals the Cape Verdean identity. In this work, I recreate a revelry of colors, the bright and the uncontrollable fire movement, and the electric movements of women and men who dance celebrating the saint and the arrival of the summer solstice.
Since 2013 I emigrated, and I have no opportunity to join this celebration. This year because of the pandemic, all celebrations like that are suspended. This work is a "portal" that connects me to the emotion of celebrating my identity.

In this work, I want to relativize the distance of observation and physical proximity. This should happen in two different times of observation:

1 - I created a cosmography that seen as gaze directed to the sky, transports us to a galaxy, a nebula, a planet in birth, or even to the unknown, the unrecognizable and abstract of outer space. On the surface of the canvas, I travel — unprepared — to visualize the plasma.

2 - I create an almost quantum world that is observed towards the skin, which transports us to an inner universe. In that universe, we observe tissues, organs, muscles, nerves, bones, organic constellations, and complex cellular systems presumably recognizable. On the surface of the canvas, I travel — unprepared — to my interior.
