The Carefish/catch project intended to assess the several impacts fisheries have on fish welfare and define the aspects with most potential to reduce animal suffering in different fisheries and for different species. Despite aquaculture has been under significant scrutiny in terms of animal welfare in recent years, when it comes to fisheries, this issue is generally absent from the public debate a

💧 World Cleanup Day – September 20

Healthy waters are essential for ecosystems, people, and the welfare of fish and other aquatic animals.

Pollution — from plastics, chemicals, or abandoned fishing gear — affects water quality, stresses aquatic life, and compromises animal welfare. Cleaner waters mean safer habitats, more responsible practices, and higher standards of fishing.

Today we celebrate by reminding that collaboration among fishers, scientists, policymakers, and civil society is key to reducing waste and protecting aquatic environments. Together, we can promote better fishing standards and better conditions for aquatic life.

🌊 Fish deserve care, and responsible fishing starts with the people on the boats. We know it’s not always easy for fishers — challenges exist — but with support and guidance, better practices are possible. 🐟💙

✅ Avoid catching juveniles
✅ Minimize bycatch and discards
✅ Use methods and practices that reduce stress and injury

Every choice matters. Fishers, consumers, and companies together can create a positive change for oceans and fish welfare.

📢New report about welfare assessment in fisheries!

Carefish/catch was a multiannual research project that aimed to assess global animal welfare impacts in fisheries. One important objective of the project was to identify keypoints of welfare hazards and suggest improvements to reduce suffering of individuals in specific fishing methods. 🎯

We’ve released our latest report assessing welfare risks in pole-and-line fishing! 🐟 It highlights key factors affecting fish welfare during capture, onboard handling, stunning, and slaughter, including specific attention to the live baitfish used. This fishing method targets fast-moving fish schools of large pelagic species, like tunas.🎣

🎧 The fair-fish database programme is an initiative by the Fish Etho Group Association, featured through their podcast Fish Talk. This series brings you short audio episodes based on species whose welfare profiles are already published in the fair-fish database — offering accessible insights into their natural needs, behaviours, farming conditions, fishing methods, and welfare risks.

🐟 The current set of episodes based on fished species covers all five fished species with profiles already available in the catch branch of the database:

✅Atlantic mackerel caught by purse seine
✅ European hake caught by set nets
✅ Atlantic chub mackerel caught by purse seine
✅ Atlantic herring caught by purse seine
✅ Peruvian anchoveta caught by purse seine

All episodes are just a few minutes long — a quick way to dive into fish welfare and ethology in wild capture contexts.
