El descascaramiento o “spalling” en el concreto es un defecto que se observa muy comúnmente en estructuras, usualmente viejas, en Puerto Rico. Esta condición es provocada por la expansión volumétrica por corrosión que sufre la varilla o acero de refuerzo al estar en contacto con humedad de aire o agua por tiempo prolongado. Comúnmente se le llama a esto “varilla explotada”. De no atenderse, esta condición puede degradarse a tal punto que su reparación puede ser muy extensa y costosa y hasta producir fallas estructurales.

La evaluación, diagnóstico y tratamiento adecuados para esta y otras condiciones similares son fundamentales para asegurar la durabilidad de la inversión y el restablecimiento de la capacidad de la estructura que se repara. El uso de materiales adecuados y el entrenamiento técnico correcto, tanto en la identificación de defectos, como en la aplicabilidad y uso de los mismos es muy recomendable para salvaguardar vida, propiedad e inversión.

Phase 1 of Combined Heat and Power project completed at Edwards Lifesciences and Technologies in Añasco PR. Very complicated site with existing infrastructure and high water table. A 20,000 gal. gas tank was requested by the owner to be installed underground while generator was installed at existing warehouse site that had to be demolished. VPC provided all permitting, civil and structural design for this engineering challenge. Very happy that we pulled it through without major issues.
