📣 Membership Renewal Policy Update

Scouting America has announced an important change that simplifies the renewal process for members whose registrations have expired.

Effective immediately, youth and adult members whose registration has expired may renew their membership within **12 months of expiration** without completing a new application.

🔹 What This Means

✅ Youth members may renew within 12 months of expiration without submitting a new application.

✅ Adult members may renew within 12 months of expiration without submitting a new application.

🔹 Exception

A new adult application is still required if the adult is transferring to a different unit with a different chartered organization than their previous unit.

This change helps simplify the re-registration process and makes it easier for former members to return to active participation in Scouting.

Unit leaders and registrars should keep this update in mind when working with families and volunteers whose memberships may have recently expired.

New research from Scouting America and The Harris Poll provides compelling evidence that the benefits of Scouting extend well beyond youth.

In a survey of more than 3,100 adults, Eagle Scouts reported significantly higher levels of enjoyment, gratitude, purpose, optimism, and overall life satisfaction compared to those who never participated in Scouting. They were also less likely to experience loneliness, sadness, and fear, even after accounting for factors such as age, education, and income.

The study also found that Eagle Scouts are more likely to engage in healthy habits, including spending time outdoors, maintaining routines, setting health goals, and following a balanced lifestyle.

Scouting is not just about earning badges or achieving ranks. It's about developing leadership, resilience, character, and a sense of purpose that can positively influence individuals throughout their lives.

📣 Important Membership Renewal Update

Scouting America has announced that the current membership lapse period will be phased out and will end on **December 31, 2026**.

🔹 What Is Changing?

The lapse period has allowed members a short grace period after their renewal date before their membership becomes inactive. As Scouting America moves toward a simpler and more consistent renewal system, this lapse period will gradually be reduced and then eliminated.

📅 Key Dates

✅ Members with an **October 2026** renewal date will be the last to receive the full **two-month lapse period**.

✅ Members with a **November 2026** renewal date will receive a **one-month lapse period**.

✅ Members with a **December 2026** renewal date will receive **no lapse period**.

Beginning in September 2026, new and renewing units will use the standard charter fee plus pro rata fees through February 2028.

📅 Beginning January 1, 2027, members must be current in their registration to maintain active status.

Unit leaders, committee members, and families should begin planning ahead to ensure memberships are renewed on time and there is no interruption in participation, advancement, or registration status.

More information will be shared as Scouting America continues implementing its simplified membership and renewal processes.

Scoutbook Plus Update

Attachments are now supported in messaging. The supported filetypes are Excel, Word, Powerpoint, pdf, heic, jpg, png, gif, mov, zip, csv, mp4 and txt. Click the Add Files button to select files to send. There is a limit of 5mb/file and 10mb/message.

Scouting America ha proporcionado orientación adicional sobre la capacitación en protección de menores (SYT). Se recomienda a los voluntarios seguir estos pasos para asegurar que su estado de capacitación se actualice correctamente:

✅ Comience siempre desde My.Scouting

Safeguarding Youth Training Update (June 4, 1:00 PM ET)

Scouting America has provided additional guidance regarding Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT). Volunteers are encouraged to follow these steps to ensure their training status is updated correctly:

✅ Always Start from My.Scouting
• Log into My.Scouting and use the "Start" or "Retake Course" button
• Do not search for the course manually
• This ensures you are directed to the correct version of the training

✅ Verify Your Training Status First Before Retaking Training:
• Check your training status and expiration date in My Training
• Confirm whether your SYT is already current

✅ Take the Correct Course
• If your SYT is expired beyond the allowed window or has never been completed, take the full 90-minute course
• If you are eligible and current, complete the refresher course
• Taking the wrong course may not update your certification status

✅ Watch for Navigation Prompts
• Scroll within the course window and ensure all content is viewed before proceeding
• Progress buttons may not be immediately visible on all screen sizes

✅ If the Course Freezes or Will Not Advance
• Exit the course and relaunch it from My.Scouting
• If the issue continues, report it through your council so it can be escalated to IT

✅ If You Receive an Expiration Notice
• First verify your status in My.Scouting
• Some expiration notices were sent in error and are currently being addressed
• If your training is current, there may be no action required

Scouting America is actively working with IT and Learning Management System partners to:
• Correct email notification logic to improve accuracy
• Improve course routing between the full SYT and refresher courses
• Address user interface issues affecting course navigation and completion
• Continue monitoring system performance following recent infrastructure updates

Please check My.Scouting for the most current information regarding your training status before retaking any courses.

Scouting America Military Family Fee Waiver

Effective June 1, 2026, Scouting America is expanding access to Scouting for military-connected youth by waiving the $85 national youth registration fee for eligible families. This program applies to youth members only and is available for both new and renewing online registrations. The initiative is funded nationally through philanthropic efforts.

Eligible families include those with current service in the Active Duty, Reserve, or National Guard. The waiver covers only the national youth registration fee, reducing the $85 cost to $0 after the required verification and discount code process is completed. Local council fees, unit dues, optional add-ons such as Scout Life magazine, and processing fees may still apply.

To receive the waiver, families should select “Get Military Discount Code” during the online registration process, complete the verification steps, receive the verification code, and enter it at checkout. Once the code is applied, the national registration fee is reduced to $0.

Scouting America notes that the $85 fee may initially appear during checkout but will be removed after the verification code is entered. The waiver is available only for online registrations.

Scoutbook Plus has released new updates to improve communication and visibility for leaders, Scouts, and families.

The Scout’s profile page now displays the Merit Badge Counselors a Scout is actively working with, located directly below the Parents/Guardians section. This makes it easier for leaders and families to see who is supporting the Scout’s advancement journey.

BCC is now available in Messaging. This update provides added flexibility when sending messages while maintaining appropriate communication practices.
