The visit of Yuvraj Sambhaji Chhatrapati, son of the Maharaja of Kolhapur, to Warsaw reminded me of 2019 when I - Zofia Pręgowska with Tomasz Stankiewicz, Polish documentary filmmakers researching a film about Polish refugees in India - had the honor to participate in the extraordinary commemoration ceremony of the Polish Refugee Camp in Valivade, India.

Few people know that Kolhapur was the largest Polish refugee camp in India, sheltering over 5,000 refugees - mainly women and children who survived the hell of Siberia.

During the ceremony hosted by HH Maharaja of Kolhapur Chhatrapati Shahu II Bhonsle, twenty survivors attended, having traveled from all corners of the world. For some, it was their first time revisiting the place that gave them shelter and served as their home for several years.

Wizyta Yuvraja Sambhaji Chhatrapati, syna maharadży Kolhapuru, w Warszawie przypomniała mi, jak w 2019 roku, ja - Zofia Pręgowska z Tomaszem Stankiewiczem, jako polscy dokumentaliści pracujący nad filmem o polskich uchodźcach w Indiach - mieliśmy zaszczyt uczestniczyć w wyjątkowej ceremonii upamiętnienia Obozu Polskich Uchodźców w Valivade w Indiach.

Niewiele osób wie, że Kolhapur był największym polskim obozem w Indiach, który dał schronienie ponad 5000 uchodźcom - głównie kobietom i dzieciom ocalałym z piekła Syberii.

Podczas uroczystości u Jego Wysokości Maharadży Kolhapuru, Chhatrapati Shahu II Bhonsle, uczestniczyło dwadzieścioro ocalałych, którzy przyjechali na tę uroczystość z różnych stron świata. Niektórzy po raz pierwszy odwiedzili miejsce, które dało im schronienie i przez kilka lat było ich domem.

Wspaniałe spotkanie po 2 latach na organizowanym przez Ambasadę Indii “Upamiętnieniu Dobrych Maharadżów". Spotkaniu pielęgnującym pamięć o władcy Nawangaru Jam Sahebie Digvijaisinghi, który podczas II Wojny Światowej, przyjął do swojego królestwa tysiąc polskich dzieci, budując im obóz nad Morzem Arabskim oraz rodziny królewskiej z Kolhapur, na której ziemi również powstał obóz dla polskich uchodźców.
“Dzieci Maharadży. Fajna Ferajna w Indiach” to dokument interaktywny, którego pomysłodawczynią i producentem kreatywnym jest Zofia Pregowska, absolwentka szkoły im. Dobrego Maharadży.
Dokument opowiada historię polskich dzieci ocalonych przez indyjskiego maharadżę.

Praca nad projektem trwała 4 lata i od samego początku byliśmy wspierani przez Ambasadę Indii w Polsce. Jesteśmy bardzo widzięczni za okazaną nam pomoc i cieszy nas, że Tomasz mógł swoją wiedzą na temat tej historii wesprzeć Panią Ambasador przy organizacji spotkania upamiętniającego Maharadżów.

“Maharaja’s children. Brave bunch in India” directed by Tomasz Stankiewicz is a story of little Wiesio, one of a thousand polish children saved by Indian maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji during Second World War.

Working on this extraordinary webdoc took 4 years.
