Most people can wire a panel. Far fewer can actually read the schematic that tells them how.
That gap is why a new automation engineer can stare at a wiring diagram for 20 minutes and still not know which contact closes when.
The thing nobody tells you: a schematic isn't random. It has a grammar. Once you learn to read the page/column references, the symbols, and the tag logic — every diagram in the world suddenly makes sense. Siemens, Allen-Bradley, a random machine from 1998. Same rules.
That's the whole idea behind our course "How to Read Electrical Schematics — Industrial Automation Basics." 78 lessons taking you from symbols → motors → control cabinets → PLC I/O → drives → machine safety.
Beginner friendly, 4.9/5 from 1000+ students, lifetime access.

See how our safety controller detects a short circuit to L+ when the channel is in a high state. This demonstration highlights the difference in protection between L+ potential and VS1/VS2 potential with test pulses.

Learn how to connect a dual-channel device to a single channel in a Siemens safety module. The schematic shows a single NC contact, but you can connect a safety relay or other devices. Using terminals 13 and 14 connects two contacts in series, enabling dual-channel operation.

Discover how connecting a Siemens sensor in single-channel mode to an input, like channel 0, can achieve a maximum of Category 3 up to Performance Level D. Full details are available in Siemens documentation.

Understanding signal powering: internal or external. Internal uses VS1 or VS2 for section B. External powers from +24 volts. We'll select internal for both channels, with the short circuit test unchecked for now.

Category 3 for single channel connections is achievable with proper external wiring fault diagnosis, cable routing, protection, and testing. FDI inputs offer diagnostics and redundancy, preventing single internal faults from causing dangerous failures. A single sensor's resistance to internal faults helps achieve Category 3, but external wiring needs extra measures against single-fault dangers.
