While visiting the beautiful open-air museum in Maurzyce, I couldn't resist bringing my nalbinding with me. Different traditions, different regions, but the same appreciation for handmade craftsmanship. Here I'm demonstrating how to begin the Oslo stitch — one of my favourite nalbinding stitches. If you'd like to learn more, you'll find detailed instructions in my book "Loops in time: Nalbinding". 🧶📖

Nalbinding PDF Tutorial – Oslo & Fåberg Stitches | Hat Pattern | Beginner Friendly | 66 Pages + Video - Etsy 30/05/2026

Hello everyone!

After nearly 10 years of practising and teaching nalbinding, I decided to gather the knowledge, techniques, and observations I have collected over the years into a single publication.
The book is aimed especially at beginners and focuses on two stitches that I believe are the best starting point for learning nalbinding: Oslo and Fåberg. The project included is a hat, but the main goal is to help readers understand how the stitches work and how to build forms from them.

Inside you will find:
- step-by-step instructions,
- diagrams and illustrations,
- video tutorials,
- stitch charts,
- practical tips based on workshop experience,
- information about materials, finishing techniques, and hat construction.

The book is currently available at a promotional price until June 1st.

I hope it will make learning nalbinding easier and help more people discover this wonderful craft.

Happy nalbinding! 🧶🪡

*Book and e-book update*

Over the past few weeks, I returned to my beginner tablet weaving book (and e-book) and updated it with revised text, clearer explanations, and additional beginner tips based on the questions people ask me most often.

I added more guidance about yarn choice, S/Z threading, border tablets, tension, finishing techniques, and a few small things that make the first woven band much less confusing :).

The updated PDF version is now available in my Etsy shop.

I still believe simple patterns are the best way to begin. Once your hands learn the rhythm of turning the tablets and controlling the tension, more complex patterns become much easier and much more enjoyable.

Thank you to everyone who has been learning from this little book over the years.

Link will be added in the comment.

Which Polish ethnographic museum holds the largest collection of tablet-woven bands? The answer is the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków (MEK Muzeum Etnograficzne w Krakowie ). During my research in the museum’s collections, I came across five surviving tablet-woven bands, although one managed to escape the camera 🙂.

I am currently working on a year-long research project focused on folk tablet weaving in 19th- and 20th-century Poland. The project explores where and how tablet weaving survived in rural textile traditions, and why it disappeared, becoming an archaic technique in comparison to weaving bands using heddles. Spoiler alert: the 2nd option is way easier when it comes to achieving geometric patterns and was supported by the state in the socialist times.

The tablet woven bands in the Kraków museum share fairly similar patterns, based on zigzags and strong contrasting colours. Designs like these are highly characteristic of tablet weaving. Most of the bands were woven from wool, although some also include plant fibres such as linen, cotton or h**p but I can't say which for sure. Their exact age is difficult to determine, but they are at least 100 years old, and possibly older. They have survived in remarkably good condition for their age 🙂.

The next stage of my research project is to reconstruct some of these patterns and weave them. I’ll soon share the process, patterns and results here on Facebook, Instagram, Patreon (free access) and on the blog of Stowarzyszenie WICI / WICI Association who is the the media patron for the project.

The project “Lost Thread of Heritage. Tablet Weaving in Polish Folk Culture” is carried out as part of a creative scholarship programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

I’m explaining why tablet weaving is suitable for weaving neat stripes. We're also looking into the difference between tablet weave and plain weave achieved on a hand-held rigid heddle. It is a bit technical this time but...
