MISTAKEN BELIEFS ABOUT RELAPSE

"Relapse doesn't occur suddenly, not does it only involve the use of alcohol or drugs. Rather it is a slow progression that creates the over whelming need to start using drugs or alcohol."
A person in recovery works hard to avoid relapse by attending meetings and groups. Many recovering individuals simply hold the belief that sobriety means only abstinence from alcohol or drugs. Whereas this is simply not the true. Yes abstinence is a major part of staying in recovery but learning how to live a meaningful and productive life without substance abuse, handling triggers managing cravings is another essential part of recovery. Recovery is the ability to move forward in life.
Some common false beliefs held by the patient's and their families are:
1. If I relapse I am not motivated to stay sober.
2. I will recover only when i want to stay sober.
3. If I relapse it means I have not hurt enough to learn.
4. No form of treatment can help me.
Another destructive belief is;
5. This treatment will be 100% effective in helping me stay sober.
All these destructive beliefs are simply not true. A relapse history doesn't mean the person is incapable of staying sober, it just means you are chemically dependent on the substance and need further treatment.

When you loose someone, often to protect ourselves our brain uses a defence mechanism in which we stop talking or thinking about the deceased all together. This mechanism doesn't help in moving forward rather it stalls your progress.
The first step towards moving forward is to embrace the loss, embrace the pain, anger, guilt and sadness you may feel.
Then remember the good moments you spent with them.
As the saying goes time heals all wounds. Time makes it a little bearable for you to remember your loved one only now with fond memories, rather than that pinching pain.
