On May 2nd, 2026, members of the OWSD Pakistan National Chapter participated in the Academic Leadership Development Workshop for Graduate Students: Focus on Empowering HER at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi.
The workshop was organized by the Departments of Biological and Biomedical Sciences in collaboration with Continuing Professional Education at Aga Khan University.
The event speakers included a senior member of the OWSD PNC, Prof Zahra Hasan, who talked about Developing Leadership Skills and Confidence. Prof.Saima Saleem, Secretary of OWSD PNC, facilitated a virtual session titled "Creating Opportunities for Female Academic Leadership" as part of the workshop.

Pakistan has achieved a major breakthrough in livestock genomics: the whole genome sequencing of Red Sindhi cattle, completed by the Dr. A.Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE) at the University of Karachi. Funded by the Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC) Post Doctoral Fellowship Program PhaseâI, the research was led by Dr. Roohi Kanwal under Prof. Dr. Saima Saleem, in collaboration with the Sindh Institute of Animal Health (SIAH) and Gene Janch Center. The team also sequenced the Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV) from infected animals, offering critical insights into host-pathogen interactions. This milestone unlocks key genes linked to milk yield, heat tolerance, and disease resistance, enabling precision breeding and stronger biosecurity. Beyond science, it promises economic gainsâhealthier cattle mean better food security and rural incomes. Pakistan now joins the ranks of countries using genomics to fight climate challenges and boost agriculture. A proud moment for KIBGE, SHEC, and the nation. đđ§Ź
