Thanks and appreciation to the dedicated efforts of the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, the Chief Secretary, ACS, Secretary Water&Power, Project Director and untiring efforts of PMU , the CDWP has recommended enhancing the Hanzel Hydropower Project to 40 MW. This decision reflects a commitment to improving energy infrastructure in the region.

BACKGROUND:
The Hanzel Hydropower Project is located on Gilgit River that is a right bank tributary of Indus River. The project is proposed on stretch Gilgit River upstream of Gilgit city. The project is 11.5 km from Gilgit city. Gilgit city is headquarter of Gilgit Baltistan and the biggest city in the area.
20 MW Hydropower Project Hanzel has been identified through studies undertaken by various agencies of Government of Pakistan and Government of Gilgit Baltistan. In 1982 Feasibility Study for the scheme was prepared by Planning and Investigation Division of WAPDA wherein construction of 30 m high rock fill dam was proposed by WAPDA and it was not constructed due to submergence issue of Hanzel Town. This scheme was located 8 km upstream of Gilgit Town. Later, Feasibility Study of 20 MW Hanzel Hydropower Project was prepared by joint venture of M/s ACE and M/s Team in May 2009 wherein they have proposed a diversion weir located at distance of 17 km upstream from Gilgit city.
Water and Power Department has entrusted the Management Consultancy Services for Feasibility Review, preparation of EPC Tender Documents, Detail Design Review and Construction Supervision, and Contract Management of 20 MW Hydropower Project Hanzel to National Engineering Services Pakistan (Pvt.) Limited (NESPAK) on cost plus basis. Consultant’s (M/s NESPAK)
The EPC contract of 20 MW HPP Hanzel, Gilgit was awarded to M/s CNEEC-FWO JV. After the award of Contract, the EPC Contractor proposed alternative layout on the left bank of Gilgit river consisting of Diversion Weir, Intake Structure, Headrace Tunnel, Surge Shaft, Pressure Tunnel, Penstock, Powerhouse, Tailrace Structure, Permanent Access Bridge and appurtenant structures. The alternative left bank proposal submitted by the EPC Contractor also included a proposal for enhancement of hydroelectric power potential from 20 MW to 40 MW.
