THIS IS WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT OUR NATURE PLAYGROUP, that children get to learn through play, explore nature, and grow at their own pace, both inside and outside the classroom. 🏡

After how many weeks, we’re finally back to the garden!

We missed the little walks, curious eyes, dirty hands, and all the tiny discoveries that happen outside.

And as we watched them explore again, we were reminded that some of the best lessons happen in the simplest moments - learning to help, figure things out, be curious, notice, walk together, do things for themselves, and simply enjoy the moment.

Because not every lesson is meant to be written down. Some are lived. ♥️

“Results showed that the teachers perceived NBP (nature-based play) as a form of play that happens in the natural environment, involves natural elements, is unstructured, and aids in learning. Moreover, NBP is accorded a crucial role in all domains of early childhood development, including physical activity, cognitive learning, as well as social and emotional development.“

RESEARCH | The rapid urbanization and domination of concrete landscapes in cities diminish children’s access to natural environments and traditional outdoor play. These sedentary and technology-driven activities raise concerns about the potential consequences for child development.

This study aims to explore the lived experiences of teachers in a child development center (CDC) in implementing nature-based play (NBP) and how urbanization and decreasing green spaces in developing countries impact NBP. Using multiple case studies in the Philippines, the study interviewed teachers from a child development laboratory and applied narrative analysis.

Results showed that the teachers perceived NBP as a form of play that happens in the natural environment, involves natural elements, is unstructured, and aids in learning. Moreover, NBP is accorded a crucial role in all domains of early childhood development, including physical activity, cognitive learning, as well as social and emotional development. However, weather disturbances, safety concerns, increasing teacher workloads, and the expansion of urban infrastructure reduce natural and green spaces and challenge NBP implementation.

Findings provide recommendations for more inclusive development by incorporating green spaces in urban planning and design, as well as community participation in NBP for more holistic and resilient child development.

Our Little Outdoor Nook 🌱

When we can’t go to the garden, we bring a little bit of nature closer. 🌿

With the rain keeping our garden a little too wet for now, we made a little outdoor nook where the children can still explore, create, and enjoy nature-inspired activities.

Little hands get busy with crafts, little minds get curious, and there is always room for a few silly moments along the way.

We can’t wait to be back out in the garden, but for now, we’ll enjoy our little nook and make the most of these rainy days. 🏡
