Let’s keep our Sierra Madre green. 🌿💜

FOUND AGAIN 💜

A tiny Philippine plant that virtually disappeared from scientific records for more than a century is blooming again in the limestone forests of Masungi Georeserve in Rizal.

Exacum loheri was first collected in Rizal by Swiss botanist August Loher in 1895. No reliable collections were documented afterward, leaving scientists with little more than preserved historical specimens.

That changed when researchers conducting a snail reconnaissance survey in Masungi documented a living population. Their findings, published in the Philippine Journal of Science in 2025, included the first photographs of the species alive and indicated that Masungi supported the only known located intact population at the time.

Then in September 2026, Masungi reported another encouraging sight: several E. loheri plants blooming along its Discovery Trail.

The plant is unusual even by botanical standards. It is achlorophyllous, meaning it lacks chlorophyll, and mycoheterotrophic, obtaining nutrients through fungi rather than relying on ordinary photosynthesis. Researchers documented it in Masungi’s karst environment, highlighting the specialized life supported by its limestone forests.

Scientists described the species as extremely rare and probably threatened because of its restricted known distribution. Rediscovery, therefore, does not automatically mean it is safe.

For more than 130 years, this small plant survived beyond human observation.
Its return to scientific attention is a reminder that protecting a habitat can also protect species we may not even know are still there. 🌿💜
