Urticaria, commonly called hives, is a skin reaction that causes red, raised, itchy welts. These welts can vary in size, appear anywhere on the body, and often move around (disappearing in one spot and reappearing in another).

Key Points about Urticaria:

Cause: It’s usually triggered by an allergic reaction (food, medicine, insect bite), but it can also be caused by stress, infections, heat, or even unknown reasons (idiopathic).

Types:

Acute urticaria – lasts less than 6 weeks, often due to allergies or infection.

Chronic urticaria – lasts longer than 6 weeks, often with no clear cause.

Symptoms:

Raised, itchy welts (hives)

Redness and swelling

Itching that can be mild to severe

Treatment:

First line: antihistamines (e.g., loratadine, cetirizine, fexofenadine).

Avoid known triggers.

For severe cases: doctors may prescribe corticosteroids or biologic treatments.

If accompanied by difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips/tongue (anaphylaxis), it is a medical emergency
