[𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗] USeP Secures Patent for PAYG Solar Home System Innovation

The University of Southeastern Philippines proudly announces the issuance of the Letters Patent for the invention “A System for Using Energy,” a breakthrough pay-as-you-go solar home system (PAYG-SHS) that utilizes alternative wireless communication technologies to deliver reliable, accessible, and smart energy solutions.

Developed by Engr. Filmann T. Simpao, Engr. Renato G. Arancon, Engr. Franch Maverick A. Lorilla, and Mr. Reyman M. Zamora of the College of Engineering, this innovation was made possible through the collaboration between USeP and Learning by Doing Technologies Training Center (LEADTECH), Inc., under the DOST–CRADLE Program.

This patented system integrates multi-layer wireless communication for redundancy and reliability—making solar energy systems more efficient, accessible, and adaptable, especially for off-grid and underserved communities.

We are thrilled to announce that the University has officially received the Letters of Patent for the invention “A Device and Method for a Multi-Stage Cacao Processor” with the registration number PH12023050135.

This innovative system automates key post-harvest cacao processes—mucilage extraction, bean fermentation, and drying—ensuring more efficient, uniform, and higher-quality cacao production. With enhanced airflow, uniform mixing, and improved water coverage, this device supports farmers by boosting productivity while reducing labor-intensive steps.

The morning session of the 1st National IMPACT Conference set the tone for innovation and collaboration!

From the inspiring welcome of DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr., to messages of support from Dr. Carmelo Ambut of Iloilo Science and Technology University and Atty. Julianna Carbon of Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the stage was set for transformation.

Keynotes from Dr. Chalermpol Tuchinda of Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM-ASEAN), Dr. Michael Mbogoro of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Atty. Christopher Cruz of Association of Technology Transfer Professionals of the Philippines, and Dr. Irene Dal Poz of Oxentia Ltd. explored global and local models of tech transfer—fueling the momentum for Filipino research to reach the world.

Boosting the technology transfer profession in the Philippines ⚙️

At SalikSYNC: The 1st National IMPACT Conference in Bacolod City, the DOST–PCIEERD and the Alliance of Tech Transfer Professionals of the Philippines (AToP) ceremonially signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration in advancing the country’s innovation agenda.

Through this partnership, both institutions will work together to refine policies and processes for technology transfer and intellectual property management, and to establish qualifications for the registration of technology transfer professionals within the IMPACT Network.

By building shared standards and supporting professional growth, this collaboration aims to empower institutions and practitioners who help transform research into solutions that serve communities nationwide. 🇵🇭

: The innovation ecosystem players kicked off the next wave of innovation through the IMPACT NXT Preliminaries Workshop 🌊✨

Last 5 November 2025, the IMPACT NXT Preliminaries Workshop brought together the IMPACT institutions and welcomed the HEIRIT universities into the fold—marking a bold step toward elevating the national commercialization rate of R&D technologies.

The workshop commenced with the introduction of the program's strategic vision by Ms. Russell M. Pili, Chief Technology Transfer Officer of DOST-PCIEERD. She delivered the opening remarks, setting the goal to elevate the national commercialization rate of R&D-supported technologies from the current 18% to 30% by 2028. This objective is fundamentally dependent on the successful implementation of an institutional advancement framework designed to transition participating Knowledge and Technology Transfer Offices (KTTOs) toward a progressive operational capability.

This strategic direction was further contextualized by the keynote address of Mr. Philip Mendes of Opteon, on "Maintaining the Relevance of IP Management in Universities and RDIs," emphasizing global best practices and insights derived from his preliminary audit in selected academic and research institutions in the country for robust intellectual property stewardship.

The plenary session provided a detailed overview of the IMPACT NXT Framework, showcasing the three foundational projects critical to achieving the commercialization target.

The core IMPACT institutions participated in a workshop focused on establishing robust data governance and privacy compliance protocols required for the impending institutional assessments and audits. Concurrently, the HEIRIT institutions participated in a separate preparatory session. This session required the HEIRIT institutions to furnish critical baseline data regarding their current institutional priorities, existing industry engagement structures, internal commercialization expertise, and specific challenges in technology transfer to ensure the customized design and effective ex*****on of competency development modules.

From strategic vision-setting to breakout sessions on data governance and institutional audits, the workshop laid the groundwork for a stronger, smarter tech transfer ecosystem.

Charting the Next Horizon with IMPACT NXT 🌊

At SalikSYNC: The 1st National IMPACT Conference, the plenary session with Dr. Luis Sison (UP Diliman), Mr. Peter Immanuel Tenido (De La Salle University), Engr. Benjamin Mirasol (Ateneo de Manila University), and Dr. Jeffrey Dellosa (Caraga State University) unveiled a new chapter in the country’s technology transfer journey — one defined by growth, collaboration, and renewed purpose.

IMPACT NXT will strengthen the foundations laid by its predecessor by refining policies and processes, developing competency frameworks, and expanding its reach to bring 26 new Technology Business Incubators into the fold. From 34 to 60 institutions, this next phase represents more than just numbers — it symbolizes a collective commitment to empower more innovators, bridge more ideas to industry, and create a future where Filipino research drives real change.

When institutions work together, ideas transform into impact, and innovation becomes a shared journey toward a better Philippines. 🇵🇭

Closing the Innovation Gap: Rebuilding the Foundations of IMPACT NXT 🌉

“The DOST today is not only funding research. It is building the bridge from research to industry.”

In her presentation, Ms. Russell Pili, Chief Technology Transfer Officer of DOST–PCIEERD, emphasized that empowering people is the true foundation of sustainable innovation. She shared that as universities expand their technology transfer offices, their capacity and commercial success also grow.

She also outlined the goals of IMPACT NXT—to strengthen institutional capabilities for technology transfer, build a skilled pool of technology transfer professionals, and help universities and R&D institutions bring research from invention to market adoption.

Her message was clear: training is never a sunk cost. Investing in people strengthens the system that turns ideas into impact, ensuring that Filipino innovations continue to move from the lab to the lives of those who need them most. 🇵🇭
