In celebration of March as Women's Month we pay tribute to the first woman architect of Southeast Asia, Filipina Mercedes Raffiñan.

In the 1934 Board Examination for Architects only 2 passed the rigorous test: Fernando Ma. Guerrero (who topped the exam) and Mercedes Raffiñan. Both were graduates of the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT). Raffiñan had architecture license no.45. Architect Raffiñan earned the distinction as the first woman architect in the history of Philippine architecture and the rest of Southeast Asia. She is also the first woman to graduate with a degree in architecture in the country - Gerard Lico, "Arkitekturang Filipino: A History of Architecture and Urbanism in the Philippines (2nd Edition)"
