This Chrome Extension Uses a Hyper-Realistic Cat to Force You Off Social Media

Japanese developer Zokuzoku built a free Chrome extension that limits daily time on X, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube to 60 minutes by default, and the enforcement mechanism is what makes it land. Once the limit is reached, a hyper-realistic chubby orange cat appears on screen, lounging across your feed with slow blinks and subtle breathing.

The cat does not leave. It sits there as an unremovable overlay until the break timer runs out, pausing if you switch tabs to make sure you actually take the break rather than route around it. The extension uses minimal permissions, collects no user data and tracks only the active time spent on supported sites.

Zokuzoku announced the extension on April 26 with a demo video that quickly racked up over 3.5 million views. Users praised its charm and the absurd genius of using a giant cat to block scrolling, calling it the most effective anti-doomscrolling tool they had encountered. Watching a feed get covered by a calm, breathing cat is apparently more powerful than any willpower-based intervention.

The extension is free, the cat is impossible to ignore and the design philosophy is clear. Sometimes the best way to stop someone from scrolling is not a notification or a warning. It is a chubby cat sitting on the screen until you go outside.
