For ‘The Carbon Footprint of the Stoic Heroic’ Jose Tence Ruiz presents mixed media works and self-portraits from the late 1970s alongside new works on canvas, a large installation that spans almost the entire large gallery space, and another depicting the artist’s body in the small gallery. The exhibition opens tomorrow, 17 October 2024, with an opening reception from 4 to 6 PM at Silverlens Manila. Tence Ruiz reappropriates religious iconography and Mondrian’s geometric abstractions to produce new visual metaphors for his current thematic preoccupations: disillusionment, genocide, and the death of utopia. There is a total of nine new works in the show, the centerpiece of which is a large mixed media installation of a baptismal font encircled by a circular queue of several hundred empty water containers, resembling a living rosary and evoking a perverse litany. Chati Coronel talks about her work ‘Of Fireworks and Halos’ (2021), which is currently on view at Silverlens New York in the group exhibition ‘Shrines’. The foundation of Coronel’s artistic practice lies in what she calls “Figurative Spatialism,” a process involving layering colors, gestures, and abstract movements one after the other. In a trance-like state, she meets the stages of her painting and daimon layer by layer. Her work emerges like as it would a sacrament: a base color or image sets the scene, and a textual rite proceeds over that foundation, and layers of figures and silhouettes eclipse one over the other, until the apparitions surface in completion. ‘Shrines’ is on view through 19 August 2023 at Silverlens New York.
