SamalOutrigger branched out from the Filipino oral tradition of passing boat building skills to the next generation. I devoted time to digitize ancient sailing outrigger designs into a complete set of boat plan.

Alejandro Jubac of Bohol, Philippines built this "Bigiw Amakan" outrigger. This is an ancient design using a woven split-bamboo to extend the sides of a dug-out keel. Almaciga tree resin were used as caulking. The Bigiw hull have similarities to canoes of Anuta in Solomon islands.

I collected and studied old photos of the Vinta outriggers of southern Philippines. The original hull is a dug-out keel with side extensions using planks. Interestingly, a plywood stitch and glue method of construction also looks good. Below is a 1:20 scale model made from A4 size cardboard paper. The designed length of the Vinta hull is 16ft, with a displacement of 360 kgs.

Fred is progressing very well on his one meter riverboat study model for Rio Grande de Mindanao. Similar boat design are used when sailing out to sea, with a higher freeboard, canopy, and outriggers installed. The lug sails are traditionally adorned with the colours of the clan.

Traditional river boats of Maguindanao and Lanao have distinct prow boards and transoms with folk art carvings. Its length ranging from 30 to 40 ft, it can transport a dozen people upstream in whitewater creeks. An all-around watercraft that can be rowed, paddled, and sailed with outriggers.

I recreated the hull lines to an S&G construction, and Fred Lubang made an excellent job in making the one meter study model.
