After mating, a female Australian redclaw crayfish typically becomes "berried" (carrying eggs) within a few hours to a few days, depending on the water condition especially temperature.
They incubate eggs 4-6 weeks in their swimmerets (small legs on the abdomen), while the best optimal warm water temperature ranging between (24-28°C), this period can be as short as 30 days.
Stage 1 (Days 1-3): The eggs are typically light cream or dark green/olive in color and very opaque.
Stage 2 (Days 4-17): The color changes to dark brown, yellow, or orange as the yolk is consumed and the embryo develops. A transparent halo may appear around the eggs.
Stage 3 (Days 17-23): Eye spots become clearly visible as tiny black dots within the eggs.
Stage 4 (Days 22-30): The abdomen and other body structures form and become visible.
Stage 5 (Days 28-35): The fully formed fry, which are orange-red in color, hatch but remain attached to the female's swimmerets for several more days.
