My father passed away yesterday.
Right now, I’m feeling a mix of grief, gratitude, and quiet reflection.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱

Children, especially those under 10 years old, are incredibly perceptive—often absorbing more from their environment than we realize. When a caregiver—someone they trust and rely on for emotional stability—is reprimanded or criticized in front of them by another adult, it can create a ripple effect that isn’t immediately visible but can leave lasting impressions.

⚠️ How does this affect the child?

• Confusion: The child may feel torn between loyalty to their caregiver and the authority of the person reprimanding them.
• Insecurity: Seeing their caregiver belittled can shake their sense of safety, as they rely on that caregiver to be their protector and moral guide.
• Behavioral changes: Over time, such situations can lead to anxiety or withdrawal, as the child struggles to process the dynamics of power and trust around them.

When someone asserts authority by reprimanding a child’s caregiver—whether a parent, mentor, or educator—it can strip that caregiver of their own authority in the child’s eyes, even if the criticism is unintentional or unwarranted.

𝘛𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 “𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳” 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳, 𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴.

The very act of doing this in front of a child (and other family members) for some inexplicable reason only reflects a lack of understanding about developmental child care, child psychology, and the lasting effects of your actions. Unfortunately, after such an incident, the reprimanded caregiver may no longer be as effective in the child’s eyes.

Let’s think before we speak out in frustration and ensure we’re modeling the respect and empathy we hope children will learn. 💬💕
